Kostas Polychroniou ( Greek Κώστας Πολυχρονίου ; born November 12, 1936 in Platanistos , Euboea ; † June 1, 2018 ) was a Greek football player and football coach or team manager .
Life
Polychronious parents moved him to Athens as a toddler . He spent all of his active football days from 1954 to 1968 at Olympiacos, from the age of 18 . With Olympiacos he was able to celebrate seven Greek championships and nine cup wins. In addition, there were five titles as champions of Piraeus and a win in the Balkan Cup .
A particular highlight of his time at Olympiacos was a 2-1 win in a friendly against FC Santos in 1961 with Pelé as an opponent. At the end of their European tour, the Brazilians may have been exhausted, but they had previously beaten AEK Athens 3-0 and Panathinaikos 3-2.
Polychroniou was appointed to the Greek national football team a total of 27 times between 1957 and 1967.
As a football coach he worked from 1979 to 2001, including as national coach from 1994 to 1998. With the exception of AS Rhodos and FC Paniliakos , the clubs he was in charge of were all on the Greek mainland. In the 1993/94 season, when he looked after his home club Olympiacos, the neighbor AEK Athens became champions. In his balance as national coach there are 17 wins, 5 defeats and ten draws.
