The Greek football club PAE Ionikos ( Greek ΠΑΕ Ιωνικός Νίκαια ) was founded in 1965 and is based in Nikea , a northern suburb of Piraeus .
history
In June 1965 the then President Alex Meraklidis merged the clubs "Nikea Sport Union" and "Aris" and merged to become "Ionikos FC". Already in the first year of existence they made it to the 2nd Greek league thanks to a surprisingly good performance. In 1989 Ionikos rose to the first division, where Nikos Kanellakis took over the club and became the new president. In 2007 the club was relegated to the second division. The club's best placements were two fifth places in the 1996/97 and 1997/98 seasons. In the 1999/2000 season, the club took part in the UEFA Cup for the only time so far and were eliminated in the first round against FC Nantes .
Altogether they spent 16 years in the first class. In 2011 the forced relegation to the fourth division followed. Ionikos is now back in the Football League , the third highest Greek league.
