Michael Heinz Skibbe (born August 4, 1965 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a German soccer coach and former soccer player . Most recently he was employed by Borussia Dortmund as a junior coach.
Career
As a player
In his youth, Skibbe played at SG Wattenscheid 09 . With her he became German B youth champion in 1982. He then moved to FC Schalke 04 . Between 1984 and 1986 he played 14 Bundesliga games for the club until his career came to an abrupt end with two cruciate ligament tears . In the 1983/84 season he ran once for Schalke in the 2nd Bundesliga. At the end of this season, Schalke rose.
In 1983 he was part of the German squad at the U-18 European Championship in England, where he formed the midfield with Herbert Hoos and Manfred Pomp . At times, Skibbe belonged to two youth national teams at the same time.
As a trainer
Schalke and Dortmund
At the age of 22, he became a sports disability and began a career as a coach in the youth field Schalke 04 by a request from Rudi Assauer was Skibbe coach of the B-youth of Schalke and replaced the previous coach Günther Thon, the father of Olaf Thon , from. In 1989 he became youth coordinator at Borussia Dortmund , where he coached the senior youth team in 1994 and the amateur team in 1997. In 1998 he took over the post of head coach of the Bundesliga team at short notice as the successor to Nevio Scala . Skibbe led the club to fourth place in its first season. After a year and a half and a series of 16 games with only two wins, Skibbe was dismissed as head coach after the 18th matchday of the 1999/2000 season and returned to the position of junior coordinator.
DFB
He gave up the post of youth coordinator for BVB when he received an offer from the DFB to lead the national soccer team. Together with Rudi Völler , who himself did not have a coaching license, he formed a double top in the DFB team from 2000 to 2004 . In terms of the public image, he was the “second man”, and Völler took over responsibility for the team. After the elimination of the national team in the preliminary round of the 2004 European Football Championship in Portugal , Skibbe and Völler resigned as national coach on June 24, 2004. Skibbe then acted from August 24, 2004 to October 9, 2005 as DFB youth coordinator and coach of the U-18 national team. In summer 2005 he was in charge of the German U-20 team at the World Cup in the Netherlands.
Bayer Leverkusen
From October 9, 2005 to May 21, 2008, Skibbe was the head coach of Bayer 04 Leverkusen , where his former colleague Rudi Völler was again the sports director. A good first half of the 2007/08 season was followed by a bad second half , in which the Champions League was gambled away first and the UEFA Cup on the last matchday . For this reason, the works club decided to terminate the contract with Skibbe early. Skibbe was the first Leverkusen coach since the club's first participation in the competition in the 1997/98 season who did not make it into the UEFA Champions League (apart from interim coaches who were only briefly active).
Skibbe's greatest success in Leverkusen was a winning streak of seven Bundesliga games in a row in the second half of his first season.
Galatasaray Istanbul
At the beginning of the 2008/09 season , Skibbe took over Galatasaray Istanbul with a one-year contract plus option . Last year the club was trained by Karl-Heinz Feldkamp . The club split from the latter six match days before the end and assistant Cevat Güler led the club to the championship. So Galatasaray went as the defending champion under the new head coach Michael Skibbe in his first season.
Shortly before the start of the league, he won the first title of his career: In the final of the Turkish Supercup , his team beat Kayserispor 2-1 . After narrowly missing the Champions League against Steaua Bucharest , he was in public criticism and was dismissed on February 23, 2009 after a 2-5 defeat on the 21st matchday against the promoted Kocaelispor . Galatasaray was in fifth place at the time. Bülent Korkmaz took over Skibbe's position until the end of the season, but couldn't change anything on fifth place, although he managed to expand the gap to first place from eight to ten points.
Eintracht Frankfurt
On June 5, 2009, he became the successor to the retired Friedhelm Funkel at Eintracht Frankfurt . On March 22, 2011, he was dismissed, although his team had succeeded in the first back round victory after his team fell into the relegation ranks after a very successful first half of the season (7th place) in the second half with only five points from ten games. Christoph Daum became his successor . Under Skibbe, Eintracht remained without a goal for 793 minutes in a row.
Eskişehirspor
On July 17, 2011 Michael Skibbe agreed with the Turkish first division club Eskişehirspor on a three-year contract. He made his debut on the sideline on September 10, 2011 in the game against Beşiktaş Istanbul , which ended with a 2-1 win. In the first half of the season Skibbe scored 30 points in 17 games and led the team to fourth place in the table. Eskisehirspor was named Team of the Year, and the ex-Dortmund Brazilian Dedê , who he brought to the club , was recognized as a player in the first half of the season. Skibbe - like many players and employees - was not paid by the club for months because there was obviously no financial basis. He decided to turn on FIFA, sue the club and leave it.
Hertha BSC
On December 22, 2011, Hertha BSC introduced Skibbe as the club's new head coach. Skibbe made use of his release clause on December 31, 2011 at Eskişehirspor and signed a two-and-a-half-year contract in Berlin until June 30, 2014. After three Bundesliga defeats in a row, he was out of the DFB Cup. After Hertha also lost the Bundesliga game 5-0 at VfB Stuttgart , he was dismissed after only five competitive games and fifty days in office, not being able to score a single point. Both in terms of the length of the term of office and the number of competitive games, this was one of the fastest dismissals in the history of a coach that was actually planned as a long-term solution. Skibbe had a contract with Hertha until 2014, which, according to the BILD newspaper on February 13, 2012, earned him a severance payment of 500,000 euros (plus 150,000 euros already earned salary). The BILD put the income resulting from the employment relationship at around 15,000 euros per day that he worked in Berlin, with which he also wrote a piece of Bundesliga history. Skibbe himself describes the contract in Berlin as a mistake, because he could not have recognized the true situation of the club in advance.
Kardemir Karabükspor
In May 2012, the Turkish first division club Kardemir Karabükspor signed Skibbe. He signed a contract for two years until June 30, 2014. Skibbe was released after the 10th match day of the 2012/13 season . His team won only two league games and slipped to 16th place in the table with nine points from ten games.
Grasshopper Club Zurich
On June 15, 2013, the Swiss runner-up, Grasshopper Club Zurich, confirmed Michael Skibbe's commitment. He signed a contract for one season; if successful, the contract should automatically be extended for another year. In January 2014, his contract was extended to June 30, 2015. In January 2015, the Zurich company announced the mutual separation of Skibbe, as he wanted to "reorient himself professionally".
Eskişehirspor
On January 9, 2015 Eskişehirspor signed Skibbe again. After four defeats in a row in the 2015/16 Süper Lig season, the club parted ways with Skibbe on October 11, 2015.
Greek national team
From October 2015 to October 2018, Skibbe was the head coach of the Greek national team . In the qualifying group for the 2018 World Cup, Skibbe reached second place with the Greeks and thus moved into the play-offs, where the team failed against Croatia. Skibbe then extended his contract until the end of 2019. Skibbe had succeeded in "making a team out of a wild bunch against which any other team could win," said association boss Evangelos Grammenos. On October 25, 2018, the Greek association announced its dismissal after defeat in the C-League of the Nations League against Hungary and Finland. The 65-year-old Angelos Anastasiades was appointed as his successor.
Return to BVB
For the 2019/20 season , Skibbe took over the A-youth (U19) from Borussia Dortmund , who plays in the Bundesliga West , and at the same time became chief trainer of the youth teams at BVB. At the beginning of May 2020, the club announced that it would use Skibbe for the following season as trainer for the second team, which he had already looked after until 1998. Their previous coach Mike Tullberg , however, should take over the A-youth.
At the end of May 2020, however, the association parted with its employee, whose contract had been extended until 2022. He was accused of having a “lax work ethic” and other personal reasons that “shook the relationship of trust”.
