Dispute with FIFA

On July 3, 2006, FIFA announced that the Greek Football Association was violating the political independence required by FIFA and that it would be suspended for an indefinite period of time. Thus, the Greek association was forced to implement previously proposed legislative changes against the interference of the state in the affairs of the association. FIFA issued an ultimatum until July 15, 2006. In Greece it was speculated that FIFA would assume that the association would not be able to implement the changes in such a short time, which means the exclusion of all national teams and clubs of Greece from all international competitions would have. There were also doubts about the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League final in Athens, despite the fact that it had been scheduled beforehand .

However, on July 7, 2006, and thus much earlier than anticipated, the Greek government changed the existing sports law in agreement with the Football Association.
