The Svenska Fotbollförbundet ( SvFF ) is a Swedish sports association and the umbrella organization of the Swedish football . The association was founded on December 18, 1904.

history

The first sports clubs developed in Sweden as early as the 1870s. In addition to gymnastics , athletics , ice skating , rowing and swimming were the most widespread sports. However, that changed in the 1880s when football , rugby and bandy were imported from England .

At the beginning there was a dispute over the direction of association football and rugby, which can be found in almost all European countries . On May 22, 1892 IS Lyckan's soldiers and Örgryte IS competed against each other. The game, which Örgryte IS won 1-0, is considered to be the first football game under the association rules between two Swedish teams. 1895 in Gothenburg the Svenska Idrottsförbundet founded a sports federation, which should include all sports. After football teams also joined the association, it organized the Svenska Mästerskapet from 1896 . First champion was Örgryte IS with a 3-0 win over IS Idrottens Vänner .

At the same time, the Idrottsföreningen Kamraterna or Stockholms Idrottsförbund developed as rival associations . While the former played the Kamratmästerskapen from 1901 , the team from the other association played for the Rosenska Cups from 1899 .

In 1901, Svenska Gymnastik- och Idrottsförbundet , founded in 1891 by Viktor Balck , had its own football section, headed by Clarence von Rosen . Svenska Bollspelsförbundet was founded on May 6, 1892, with von Rosen as chairman. On March 23, 1904, a football section was created at Riksidrottsförbundet, which had been founded a year earlier . In the period that followed, events rolled over. Initially founded on March 27 in Eskilstuna the Svenska Fotbolls unions before May 28, when Bollspelsförbundet on cooperation with the Riksidrottsförbundet was discussed. When its football section invited to participate in its championship, the Bollspelsförbundet forbade its members from any participation. On July 20th, Svenska Fotbolls Unionen and Riksförbundet agreed on a collaboration, and a week later Bollspelsförbundet also agreed . On December 18, 1904, 77 clubs met in Stockholm to found the Svenska Gymnastik- och Idrottsföreningarnas riksförbunds section för fotboll och bandy . A year later the current name was given.

In 1908 the association organized the first international match for a Swedish national team . On July 12, 1908, on the Balders Hage sports field, in front of 3,000 spectators, they met their Nordic neighbor, Norway, and could clearly beat them 11: 3. Karl Gustafsson scored the first goal in the history of the national team. In the same year, the team also took part in an international tournament for the first time. At the Olympic Games in 1908 , however, the team failed directly in the opening game against the English amateur national team . It was not until the Olympic Games in 1924 that a bronze medal was awarded for the first time.

The first World Cup participation took place at the second tournament in 1934 . After World War II , Swedish football had its greatest period. At the Olympic Games in 1948 , the national selection won the gold medal. Although a number of Swedish players moved to southern Europe as professional players in the following years, but the association refused profit and consequently no longer invited the players to international matches, with third place at both the World Cup in 1950 and the Olympic Games in 1952 further successes were celebrated .

The 1958 World Cup was planned and carried out by the SvFF. With second place in his own country, a short-term football euphoria arose. The Allsvenskan subsequently posted audience records.

However, after the successes could no longer be tied to after the runner-up world championship, the association replaced the Uttagningskommittén , the selection committee of the national team, with a permanent national coach. The first Förbundskapten was Lennart Nyman in 1962 .

In addition to changing successes at national team level in the 1970s - they regularly qualified for the World Championships, but failed twice in the preliminary round and only made it into the final round at the 1974 World Cup - succeeded with the entry of Malmö FF into the final of the European Cup 1979 for the first time a major success at club level. In the following decade, the gap between the national team and the clubs supported by the association widened: While the national selection could no longer qualify for any tournament, IFK Göteborg won the 1982 and 1987 UEFA Cup.

With the European Championship in 1992 , the Swedish Football Association took over the organization of a major tournament again. At the same time, the national team made their European championship debut as hosts, in which they could convince and only narrowly failed in the semifinals to Germany . With third place at the 1994 World Cup , the national selection supported by the association reported back to the major European national teams and has qualified for every major tournament since 2000.
