qualification

The division into the individual qualifying rounds is based on the UEFA access list. The order of the associations is determined by the association coefficients of the UEFA five-year ranking 2017/2018. Since last year's defending champions qualified for the Champions League have already qualified via national competitions, there will be subsequent postponements in the published access list.

The teams with the higher club coefficient of the UEFA five-year ranking 2018/19 are seeded. If the club coefficient is the same, the order is determined by the rating points achieved by the teams in the previous season or in the following years. If the previous round has not yet been completed at the time of the draw for the respective qualifying round, the higher value of the two teams in the respective outstanding pairings will be used for the seeding list.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round took place in a small elimination tournament. The host was Kosovo. The draw for the preliminary round took place on June 11, 2019, the semi-final round on June 25 and the final round on June 28, 2019 in the Fadil Vokrri Stadium in Pristina .

The three losers moved to the second qualifying round (Champions Path) of the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League , the winner to the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League first qualifying round.

Knockout phase

Round of 16

For the round of 16, eight pairings each for a group runner-up and a group winner were drawn on December 16, 2019 in Nyon, with the group winners playing the first leg away from home. Teams from a national association and previous opponents in the group stage were not allowed to be drawn against each other. The first legs took place on February 18, 19, 25 and 26, 2020, the second legs were scheduled for March 10, 11, and March 17 and 18, 2020.

Four English and Spanish, three German and Italian and two French teams each qualified. The English as well as the Spanish national association brought all teams forward, with the other three associations one club was eliminated.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the second legs FC Valencia against Atalanta Bergamo and Paris Saint-Germain against Borussia Dortmund took place to the exclusion of spectators. The same measure was announced for further return matches. On March 12, 2020, UEFA rescheduled the second round of the second leg between Manchester City and Real Madrid as well as Olympique Lyon and Juventus Turin, the next day also the two other second legs. These games were rescheduled on August 7 and 8, 2020.
