Philipp Lahm (born November 11, 1983 in Munich ) is a former German soccer player and today's entrepreneur and soccer official. He was the captain of the German national team when he won the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Born from the youth of the Munich district club FT Gern , he moved to Bayern Munich at the age of eleven , with whom he won the triple and numerous other titles in 2013. Lahm played in defense as a right or left full-back , but was also used in defensive midfield later in his career . Since the end of his playing career, he has been active as an entrepreneur. He is the managing director of DFB EURO GmbH and a member of the executive committee of the DFB .
Origin and school education
Philipp Lahm grew up in the Munich district of Gern together with his two years older sister. His father, a telecommunications engineer, played football in the district league . His mother is a youth leader at the Freie Turnerschaft Gern (FT Gern), where Lahm started playing football. He attended the municipal Rudolf-Diesel-Realschule in the Neuhausen-Nymphenburg district , where he graduated from secondary school .

Beginnings
Lahm took his first steps as a footballer for FT Gern . From 1995 he played first in the youth team of FC Bayern Munich , then from 2001 for the club's amateurs in the Regionalliga Süd . In his youth he was used both in the central and defensive midfield and as a full-back. In his first years as a youth footballer, he also played as a winger.
Since Bayern had already well filled their preferred positions with Bixente Lizarazu and Willy Sagnol Lahm, he only played a single competitive game for the professionals until 2003 when he was substituted on once in the 90th minute of the Champions League group phase .
Loan to VfB Stuttgart
Because Hermann Gerland , who then coached Bayern's amateur team, was of the opinion that Lahm was too good for a third year in the regional league, he recommended Lahm Felix Magath , who was then coaching VfB Stuttgart . In June 2003 he was loaned to the Swabians for two seasons. There he made his Bundesliga debut on the first day of play on August 3, 2003 in a 2-0 win over Hansa Rostock , when he came into the game for Silvio Meißner in the 76th minute . From the sixth game day he ousted Heiko Gerber from the position of left defender and was then part of the VfB team. In early January 2005 Lahm suffered a stress fracture in his right metatarsus, which forced him to take a break for several months; He made his competitive comeback on April 9, 2005 against FC Schalke 04 . Before the last match day, Lahm was injured again when he suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in his right knee during training, so that he was only used six times in the second half of the season. In Stuttgart he played a total of 53 Bundesliga games and scored two goals. He was also active for Stuttgart seven times in the Champions League and six times in the UEFA Cup.
FC Bayern Munich
After returning to Munich in the summer of 2005, Lahm played for the first time in the regional league game of FC Bayern II against Jahn Regensburg on November 15, 2005 after recovering from an injury . He made his comeback in the professional team four days later in the game against Arminia Bielefeld . This game was also his first Bundesliga game for Bayern. After two more substitutions, he was on the starting line-up for the first time on matchday 16 against 1. FC Kaiserslautern . Until the penultimate matchday he was then used in every second round match and gradually played his way into the regular formation.
From the 2006/07 season , in which he played all 34 point games and nine of the ten Champions League games for the first time, Lahm was a regular at Bayern Munich. His usual position was first left full defense, later right. He quickly became one of the leading players. In 2006, 2008, 2010, 2014 and 2016 he won the double ( championship and DFB Cup ) with his club . In 2010 he reached the final of the Champions League , which FC Bayern Munich lost 2-0 to Inter Milan . After Mark van Bommel's departure , Lahm became team captain of FC Bayern in January 2011. In the 2011/12 season , he again reached the final of the UEFA Champions League with FC Bayern, this time in their own stadium . There he and his team lost to Chelsea on penalties . In the 2011/12 season , Lahm completed his 200th Bundesliga appearance for Bayern Munich on March 31, 2012 in a game against 1. FC Nürnberg .
The year 2013 turned out to be the most successful in his club career for Philipp Lahm: After he had become the earliest champion in the history of the top German division with FC Bayern Munich on matchday 28 of the 2012/13 season , and on May 11th Having received the championship trophy for the first time in 2013 as captain, he then moved into the final of the UEFA Champions League for the third time in four years with Bayern Munich. With the 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund on May 25, 2013 at London's Wembley Stadium , he won the most important European club cup for the first time at the age of 29. With the 3-2 victory over his former club, VfB Stuttgart , in the DFB Cup final on June 1, 2013, the team around Captain Lahm also became the first German team to win the big European triple in men's football.
Under the new coach Pep Guardiola , under whom he was initially mainly used as a defensive midfielder due to failures at headquarters, he and the team did not succeed in defending the DFL Supercup at the beginning of the season , but by winning the UEFA Super Cup on August 30, 2013 against Chelsea FC and the FIFA Club World Cup in December of the same year, Lahm and his teammates won five major titles in a calendar year for the first time in the club's history. At the end of the year he was awarded the Silver Ball at the Club World Cup as the second best player in the tournament behind Franck Ribéry , was included by FIFA along with five teammates from FC Bayern Munich in a shortlist of 23 players for the 2013 choice of world footballer and was included in FIFA / FIFPro World XI and UEFA Team of the Year . In addition, he was classified by the kicker sports magazine in his new position in defensive midfield in the "world class" category.
On January 24, 2014, Lahm played his 300th Bundesliga game against Borussia Mönchengladbach , including 247 Bundesliga games for FC Bayern Munich and 53 for VfB Stuttgart. On March 25, 2014 (27th matchday), he was mathematically determined as German champions with Bayern as early as no other team before. In addition, the DFB Cup final against Borussia Dortmund was won 2-0 after extra time on May 17, 2014 . Lahm thus secured his fifth double . In his 321st Bundesliga game on October 18, 2014, he scored two goals in a Bundesliga game for the first time in a 6-0 win against Werder Bremen with the 1-0 and 5-0 goals and also achieved his 200th Bundesliga victory.
On November 18, 2014, Lahm broke his right ankle during training and was operated on two days later. On March 14, 2015, he made his comeback in a 4-0 win in the away game against Werder Bremen when he came on for Mario Götze in the 82nd minute . At the end of the season, the German championship was defended.
On April 13, 2016, he played his 103rd game in the UEFA Champions League in a 2-2 quarter-final second leg against Benfica Lisbon , drawing level with Oliver Kahn , making him Germany's top-tier player. On May 7, 2016 (33rd matchday), Lahm became German champions for the fourth time in a row with FC Bayern Munich , thus winning his seventh championship. He also won the double for the sixth time by beating Borussia Dortmund in the cup .
In June 2014, the term of his contract was extended to 2018. On February 7, 2017, he announced that he would end his playing career at the end of the 2016/17 season. He played his last international game in the quarter-final second leg against Real Madrid on April 18, 2017 and his last game in the DFB Cup on April 26, 2017 in the semi-finals against Borussia Dortmund . In the last season of his career, he won the German championship for the fifth time in a row with Bayern Munich . With a total of eight German championships he is the most successful player alongside Bastian Schweinsteiger , Oliver Kahn and Mehmet Scholl behind Franck Ribéry with nine championships. As captain, like Klaus Augenthaler , he has won five championships, all of them in a row. With 112 appearances in the Champions League, he held the German record until he was outbid by Thomas Müller in 2020.
National team
After a total of 20 international matches for various youth teams of the DFB, Philipp Lahm played his first international match for the senior national team on February 18, 2004 in Split in a 2-1 victory over the Croatian national team . He immediately became a regular player in the position of left defender and played 15 of 16 possible internationals in the 2004 calendar year, including all three games at the European Championship in Portugal .
Due to two serious injuries, he did not play a game for the national team in 2005 and thus missed participation in the Confederations Cup in 2005 .
After more than 14 months, Lahm returned on March 1, 2006 when he lost 4-1 to the national team of Italy . In a test match of the national team on May 16, 2006 against FSV 63 Luckenwalde (7-0) in Mannheim , he fell unlucky and pulled a partial tear of the tendon and the collateral ligament in his left elbow. He was still able to participate in the World Cup, in which he scored the first goal of the tournament in the opening game on June 9, 2006 against the Costa Rican national team in the 6th minute. Furthermore, he was voted “Man of the Match” (best player of the game) in the encounter with the national team of Poland on June 14, 2006 and, after consistently strong performances, was appointed to the 23-man World Cup All-Star Team. He is the only German player who played all World Cup games over 90 minutes.
On August 22, 2007 he took over in the international test match against the national team of England , in which he had played the "six" position in front of the defense for the first time in his professional career, in the final minutes after Bernd Schneider had been substituted for the first time in his National team career the captain's armband .
From September 2006 to November 2007, Lahm played in nine of the ten qualifying games for the 2008 European Championship and, as expected, Joachim Löw appointed him to the European Championship squad on May 16, 2008 . In the semifinals, he scored the winning goal in the 90th minute against the national team of Turkey to make it 3-2. After the game he was named "Man of the Match". In the 0-1 defeat in the final against the Spanish team , he was substituted at half-time against Marcell Jansen . The day after the final, he was elected to the 2008 European Championship All-Star Team by the UEFA Expert Committee.
In the World Cup qualification that began after the tournament, he played all ten matches and was appointed to the squad for the 2010 World Cup by national coach Joachim Loew on May 6, 2010 . Before the tournament, captain Michael Ballack was out with a serious injury. After Lahm had worn the captain's armband again briefly in October 2009 and was the captain of the team for the first time in the international match in Shanghai against China's national team on May 29, 2009 , he was named as one of the most experienced players as the substitute captain for the World Cup. Before the semi-final game against eventual world champions Spain, he caused a stir when he announced that he would remain captain after the World Cup. After the World Cup, he was elected to the FIFA All-Star Team .
After Ballack did not return to the national team after the World Cup, Lahm officially became captain of the German national team in June 2011. Shortly afterwards, he caused renewed unrest when he published his book “The subtle difference: How to become a top footballer today”. Although his main aim was to tell young players about their experiences in professional football, contrary to custom, he also criticized former teammates and coaches from the national team. Although he then received a reprimand from the German Football Association , this had no further-reaching consequences for him.
From September 2010 to October 2011 he played again all ten qualifying games for the European Championship 2012 and led the squad into the tournament as captain . He played all five games up to the semifinals over the full playing time. His 1-0 goal in the quarter-finals paved the way for a 4-2 win against the national team of Greece , but his positional error in the next game favored the 2-0 win against Italy, which turned out to be decisive. The defeat against Italy was his 14th European Championship game in the third tournament, making him the record holder for German European Championship appearances.
On September 6, 2013, Lahm completed his 100th international match as part of the 2014 World Cup qualification , and was in the starting line-up in every international match.
Lahm was appointed to the squad for the 2014 World Cup by national coach Joachim Löw . As captain, he led the team into the final, where the DFB team managed to become world champions for the fourth time. On July 18, 2014, five days after winning the title, Lahm resigned as a national player. DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach later described Lahm as an absolute role model and thanked him for his services in the national team. He was officially bid farewell on September 3, 2014 in the international test match of the DFB against the national team of Argentina in Düsseldorf together with the players Per Mertesacker and Miroslav Klose, who also retired from the national team after the World Cup .
After the active career
Since Lahm had ended his active career at the end of the 2016/17 season, he was initially under discussion for the vacant post of sports director at FC Bayern Munich. Lahm, however, said because of the strong role played by President Hoeneß, who “was still too energetic to let go” and “wanted to influence things himself” and the associated little room for maneuver. It also played a role that Lahm was discussed as a sports director and not as a sports director , who had a permanent place on the board of directors of FC Bayern and thus had more powers than a sports director .
In March 2018, the DFB announced that Lahm would accompany the German national soccer team as ambassador for the 2018 World Cup in Russia .
In addition, Lahm was hired by ARD as an expert for the 2018 World Cup. For this purpose, ARD created its own format called “Talking to World Champions”, moderated by Jessy Wellmer . The focus should not only be on the evaluation of games and results and - according to an ARD press release - "completely new and exciting perspectives on the events of the World Cup in Russia" should be presented. The program was broadcast live from Tegernsee. For this, Lahm received criticism from ARD sports coordinator Axel Balkausky , who said that Lahm's expertise was "certainly very stimulating because of his experience". Sometimes, however, the ARD would have “wished for more of this wealth of experience and even clearer assessments”.
On July 12, 2018, around a week after the German national team left the World Cup , Lahm published a letter on the social network LinkedIn in which he criticized national coach Joachim Löw for his leadership style and also criticized the training of the young generation of players who are introduced to professional football in youth development centers; the educational system would almost inevitably make them egoists. Lahm said: "I am convinced that Jogi Löw will have to change his collegial management style in recent years if he wants to be successful again with the new generation of national players". Löw must "establish a culture of tighter, clearer decisions". In his opinion, this severity would have been needed in dealing with the affair surrounding the controversial meeting of Mesut Özil and Ilkay Gündoğan with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan .
Lahm's criticism was repeatedly criticized by former soccer players, (former) soccer coaches and TV experts: Former national player Thomas Strunz saw the criticism as a "letter of application as Oliver Bierhoff's successor" and criticized Lahm's criticism as being "ineffective". In his opinion, Löw would lose authenticity if he changed his management style. Even Peter Neururer , Alexander Nouri ( "has the taste of self-promotion"), Stefan Effenberg ( "borderline") and Jürgen Klopp criticized Lahm. Lahm then defended his criticism of the national coach.
In August 2018, the DFB announced that Lahm would become head of the organizing committee for the EM in the event that Germany was awarded the contract to host the EM 2024 . On August 27, 2018, the UEFA Executive Committee decided that Germany would be awarded the 2024 European Championship, making Lahm head of the 2024 European Championship Organizing Committee.
Entrepreneur
Lahm has been a co-owner since 2015 and sole owner of Sixtus Werke , a manufacturer of care products, since 2017 . Also in the summer of 2015, Lahm tried in vain to acquire the Bogner fashion company as part of an investor consortium . Lahm is also a partner in Schneekoppe , the Berlin start-up Fanmiles, and Danova , a provider of digital preventive medical checkups .
On January 16, 2018 it was announced that Lahm will become the majority owner of Schneekoppe.
Style of play
Philipp Lahm was one of the best full-backs in the world thanks to his exceptional strength in combat and his outstanding positional play . Lahm was considered a very flexible player, so he could be used as a right or left full-back, but also as a defensive midfielder . He was characterized by precise passes and crosses, and was also considered fast and persistent. His former coach Pep Guardiola described him as "the most intelligent player [he] has ever trained".
