Honorary captain is a title with which the German Football Association honors national players for their special services to the national team . They were often captains of the national team during their playing days . This award was first given to Fritz Walter in 1958 when he stepped down from the national team. In 2004, Bettina Wiegmann was honored as the first honorary captain of the women's national team .

The honored are:

Fritz Walter was captain when he won the title in 1954 (also known as Wunder von Bern ), Beckenbauer at the 1974 World Cup in Germany and the 1972 European Championship and Matthäus at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he also played a key role in winning the title, Lahm at the World Cup 2014 . Wiegmann was the captain of the women's first triumph at the 2003 World Cup and Prinz in defending his title in 2007 and the European Championship titles in 2005 and 2009 .

In March 2018, Franz Beckenbauer suggested that Bernard Dietz , captain of the 1980 European championship team, be named honorary captain , or else he wants to share his title with Dietz.

The title of honorary captain is also awarded by clubs to deserving players; Jürgen Grabowski , for example, is the honorary captain of Eintracht Frankfurt .
