List of captains of the German national soccer team

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of the captains of the German national football team includes players who since 1908 as captain of the national team functioned. So far, 127 players have worn the captain's armband, 16 of them are still active in their clubs, but only five of them are currently in the extended squad. After the resignation of Philipp Lahm , who had been captain since 2011 and who announced his retirement from the national team after the 2014 World Cup , his deputy Bastian Schweinsteiger was appointed the new captain on September 2, 2014. Schweinsteiger was not used again until March 29, 2015, so that his deputies Manuel Neuer , Sami Khedira and Thomas Müller had to replace him in several games after the appointment. After Schweinsteiger's farewell game on August 31, 2016, Neuer became his successor on September 1.

Six players became captains in their first international match for Germany: Franz Binder , Ernst Blum , Josef Glaser , Arthur Hiller (captain of the first German international match), Johann Mock and Christian Schmidt . Mock and Binder had previously played for the Austrian national soccer team.

For nine players, their only game as captain was their last international match: Ernst Blum, Ernst Eikhof , Rudolf Gellesch , Heinrich Hergert , Andreas Kupfer , Josef Müller , Helmut Röpnack , Jakob Streitle and Serdar Taşçı . In addition, Lukas Podolski , who had already taken the captain's armband five times during a match, led the team onto the field as captain for the first time in his last international match.

On May 13, 2014, Julian Draxler replaced Christian Schmidt as the youngest captain in a friendly against Poland. On April 24, 1910, he was the captain of the national team at the age of 21 years and 299 days. At the age of 20 years and 235 days, Draxler is the first player who was younger than 21 when he first appeared as captain.
