Christian Werner Wörns (born May 10, 1972 in Mannheim ) is a former German soccer player and today's coach .

Career

Club career

The defensive player who was active in Phönix Mannheim's youth from 1980 onwards moved to SV Waldhof Mannheim in 1985 and made his debut in the top German division there in 1989 at the age of 17 years, 3 months and 30 days as the fourth youngest Bundesliga player. Christian Wörns played for Bayer 04 Leverkusen from 1991 to 1998, and in the 1998/99 season he played for Paris Saint-Germain in the French Ligue 1 .

From 1999 to 2008 he was under contract with Borussia Dortmund . There he wore the captain's armband for many years. In January 2008, Wörns had a clause deleted from his contract that would have extended it for another year if he had made at least 25 season assignments in the 2007/08 season . At the beginning of March 2008 he confirmed to kicker that he was aiming for a continuation of his career. He is currently too fit to end his career. On April 27, 2008, however , Hans-Joachim Watzke announced in the DSF one-two that Wörns would not receive a new contract offer from Borussia Dortmund for the new 2008/09 season. On May 17, 2008 he was bid farewell to Borussia Dortmund together with Philipp Degen and Alexander Bade . After no new club was found in the following months, he ended his career.

His greatest successes were the German championship in 2002 with Borussia Dortmund and the DFB Cup victory in 1992/93 with Bayer Leverkusen. In May 2002 he played with the BVB championship team from 2002 in the UEFA Cup final in Rotterdam . BVB lost this to Feyenoord Rotterdam 2: 3. In addition, Wörns and Borussia Dortmund were in the DFB Cup final in Berlin on April 19, 2008 , which the team lost 2-1 to Bayern Munich .

National team

For the national team Wörns made his debut on April 22, 1992 in a friendly match in Prague against Czechoslovakia (1-1). Wörns was used a total of 66 times, but without scoring a goal. He took part in the 1992 European Championship in Sweden , the 1998 World Cup in France and the 2004 European Championship in Portugal . At the European Championships in 1992, the national team advanced to the final. Wörns was not used at this tournament. The last time Wörns was used was on September 3, 2005, when he was substituted in the 2-0 draw against Slovakia in Bratislava at the beginning of the second half.

After he had publicly criticized national coach Jürgen Klinsmann for his non-nomination for several test internationals, Wörns was removed from the squad for the 2006 World Cup . Wörns reacted with incomprehension to the decision and accused Klinsmann of disrespect and dishonesty. His non-nomination could have nothing to do with the “performance principle” that the national coach had issued. The non-nomination also met with criticism from some national team colleagues such as captain Michael Ballack .

Coaching career

From 2009 to 2011 Christian Wörns trained the C-youth of Hombrucher SV . In January 2012 he moved to the youth department at VfL Bochum , where he was initially employed in the scouting area and coached the U15 team in the 2012/13 season. At the same time, he acquired the DFB's soccer teacher license in 2012 . For the 2013/14 season Wörns took over the B-youth of FC Schalke 04 as head coach. On July 14, 2014 Wörns was hired as assistant coach by Christian Ziege at SpVgg Unterhaching , where he also took over the post of head coach of the U-16 team. At the beginning of 2016, Wörns became the coach of the second team at FC Augsburg . In August 2017 he resigned from this post for personal reasons. Even before the winter break of the same season, Wörns signed a contract with TSV 1860 Munich , where he took over the training of the U-19 team and the supervision of TSV 1860 Munich II (managed as the U-21 team). At the end of the season, the engagement was terminated "by mutual agreement".

For the 2019/20 season, Wörns took over the position of head coach of the German U18 national team from Frank Kramer .
