A football coach is the person who creates, leads, trains and directs a football team without being part of it.
The soccer coach is often supported by an assistant coach and a goalkeeper coach .

Training in Germany
The trainer training at the German Football Association (DFB) is divided into these stages:
- Team leaders (preliminary to the licenses, partly still available in some regional associations, complete a cross-sport basic course (32 LE) at KSB / SSB.Access requirements for team leader training, similar to the basic knowledge course (30LE), which must be completed before the C-trainer license in some districts - or city football associations)
- 1st license level C-Trainer license (120 LE, formerly C-license for popular sport since 2004 for trainers, for all teams at the district level, also called UEFA Grassroots Level)
- 1st license level B coach license (aptitude test, 140 LE, formerly C license for competitive football; for training tasks in the 5th division and below, for all women's teams below the second Bundesliga and for all junior teams below the regional league, including UEFA B-level license called, you need 10 points for the next license level)
- 2nd license level DFB-Elite-Jugend license (proof of the number of points achieved by the relevant national association and must previously do a 20-hour internship at a DFB base, written application confirmation from the DFB, 160 LE, formerly B-license for competitive football for training tasks in the 5th division and including in junior football except for the A and B junior Bundesliga, for all women's teams below the second Bundesliga, for coaching activities in NLZ also called UEFA B-Level license, you need 9 points to be able to participate in the course of the next license level )
- 3. License level A-Trainer license (aptitude test, 120 LE, formerly A-license performance football for coaching tasks in the higher amateur area, for A and B junior national league, the regional league men as well as for all women and junior teams, also UEFA A-level Called license, you need 10 points to participate in the course of the next license level)
- 4th license level football teacher (approx. 1800 LE, for full-time tasks as a DFB or association sports teacher, tasks as a coach of national leagues or the management of a young talent center of a licensed club, also known as a UEFA Pro-Level license)
The football teacher training takes place at the Hennes-Weisweiler-Akademie of the DFB in Hennef , in cooperation with the German Sport University Cologne . As a rule, the prerequisite for admission to a course is proof of practical experience as a player and an existing coaching license for the previous training level (A-coaching license).
Furthermore, the following requirements must be met:
- at least one year as responsible senior trainer in the 4th division (partly regional league or association league in the regional associations) or
- at least one year as the responsible coach of an A or B junior team in the national leagues or
- at least one year as the responsible coach of a team in the women's Bundesliga or the 2nd women's Bundesliga
- at least one year as assistant coach of a team in the Bundesliga or the 2nd Bundesliga or the 3rd division or
- have worked for at least one year as a senior DFB base coordinator (full-time employee).
- If such a coaching activity was already exercised before obtaining the DFB-A license, it can be credited with half of the time upon request.
- Certificate of sufficient knowledge of the German language (only for applicants whose mother tongue is not German)
In order to be allowed to participate in a license course, I. an aptitude test from the B-Trainer license course (with a practical and theoretical part as well as an interview at the respective regional association or DFB) is required, II. Proof of medical safety, III. the submission of an extended police clearance certificate, IV. a valid EH course, V. a signed code of honor of the respective state sports federation, VI. Proof of club membership and coaching activity, VII. a valid player pass, VII. a sporting curriculum vitae and, for the football teacher, the last school report, completed forms for the curriculum vitae as a coach and as a player for admission to the course (there are also passport photos).
In order to successfully complete the course, it is necessary to take a teaching sample, participate (as a trainer or player) in a course game, a theory test as well as a final discussion on the teaching sample (exercise form and game form with a brochure) with the examination committee and give a free lecture A total of five grade points is required to pass, especially since one submits to the current DFB training regulations, the statutes and the regulations of the DFB and its responsible regional association. In order to be able to complete the next license level or course, you have to achieve a specified total number of points.
The respective trainer's license is valid for three years and is extended if the trainer can provide evidence of the necessary advanced training events (20 learning units).
In some cases, the trainer training is necessary for the promotion of the coaching position through public funding , and in some cases the training is also required for the management of a team. The best known here is the football teacher training, which is compulsory for a coach in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Bundesliga .
Training in Austria
The training at the Austrian Football Association is divided into five stages:

Any advanced training, regardless of length, is accepted as a refresher course. If someone has not yet completed a first aid course (not even as part of the car driver's license), then a standard first aid training of 16 hours must be completed, - Criminal record certificate (must not be older than 3 months). If a conviction is entered in the criminal record, the regional association will decide whether to join the course depending on the type and gravity of the offense. - The UEFA B diploma courses are completed with a 6-month internship as the main coach or assistant coach in youth training (U13 to U19) or in adult training (5th level and below) and a subsequent examination. The practice as a trainer must be recorded in written documentation, which must show at least 25 training units, and three video documentations about training units (submission deadline: 18 months after the end of the course at the latest). - Proof of sufficient written and spoken German language skills - Qualification as a coach "old" up to 4th league, "new" up to 5th & 6th league, women up to 2nd league |
