Stephan Schmidt (born August 19, 1976 in Berlin ) is a former German soccer player who has worked as a soccer coach since the end of his playing career .

Player career

Schmidt spent his youth at Mariendorfer SV and BFC Preussen , then at Hertha Zehlendorf until 1994 . After a year with the youth of the Reinickendorfer Füchse , he played in the first team of the Füchse from 1995 to 1998. This was followed by two years at SV Babelsberg 03 . In 2000 he moved to Preußen Münster and returned to SV Babelsberg for the 2002/03 season. This was followed by two years in the amateur team of Hertha BSC before he switched to Tennis Borussia Berlin in 2005 and ended his career with Grün-Weiß Vallstedt in the 2007/08 season .

Coaching career

After the end of his playing career, Schmidt returned to Hertha BSC in 2007 and worked there as an assistant coach for the U-19 team. Two years later he completed his training as a football teacher. In the same year he moved to VfL Wolfsburg , whose U19 he took over as head coach. While in his first year with the team he only finished second in the U-19 Bundesliga relay North / Northeast, he reached first place in the 2010/11 season and then won the German championship with the team. In the following season, his team took first place, but failed in the semi-finals on penalties against the U19 of FC Schalke 04 .

Schmidt began his professional coaching career in July 2012 when he signed a two-year contract with the second division club SC Paderborn 07 . Two game days before the end of the season, SC Paderborn 07 reacted on May 5, 2013 to a sustained negative series; the association and Schmidt parted by mutual agreement.

On November 6, 2013, Schmidt succeeded Rudi Bommer at Energie Cottbus . He received a contract in Cottbus until summer 2015. On February 24, 2014 Schmidt was dismissed after nine games without a win (eight defeats, one draw). His successor was Jörg Böhme .

Schmidt then trained the U17s of FC Schalke 04 .

On May 22, 2017 Schmidt announced that he would be working as a coach for the Würzburger Kickers in the third division for the new season . Schmidt was released from his duties on October 2, 2017. For the 2018/2019 season Schmidt was again coach of a youth team and succeeded Christoph Dabrowski as coach of the U19 at Hannover 96 .
