Schubert interned at FC Bayern Munich , FC Schalke 04 and Hamburger SV in the youth departments. He was also the assistant coach of the U15 , U16 and U17 national teams under Bernd Stöber .

Step into professional football

In March 2006 he became head of sports and youth development at SC Paderborn 07 and took over the training of the second team. At the beginning of April 2009 he replaced Christian Schreier on the position of sporting director . On May 13, 2009 Schubert also took over the coaching position from Pawel Dotschew and led the club to promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga with four wins in the 3rd division and in the relegation games against VfL Osnabrück .

On July 1, 2011, Schubert was hired by FC St. Pauli as head coach and thus successor to Holger Stanislawski . He signed a two-year contract but was given leave of absence on September 26, 2012.

Schubert has been a volunteer advisor at KSV Hessen Kassel since November 18, 2013 . From July 2014 he coached the German U15 national team for one season .

Borussia Monchengladbach

For the 2015/16 season, Schubert was the coach of the Borussia Mönchengladbach U23 team active in the regional league . On September 21, 2015 he initially replaced Lucien Favre, who had resigned the day before, as head coach of the club's first team until further notice . At this point in time, after five match days, they were in last place in the Bundesliga with zero points . Under Schubert, the team achieved six wins in the following six league games, setting Willi Entenmann's Bundesliga debut record . On November 13, 2015, he was promoted to head coach with a contract that ran until June 2017, the term of which was extended to 2019 on September 27, 2016. With Borussia, he was eliminated from the group stage of the 2015/16 Champions League as bottom group and was fourth in the 2015/16 Bundesliga season . After successful play-off games for the 2016/17 Champions League, he finished third in the group stage and qualified for the 2016/17 Europa League.

After just one win from eleven previous league games, Schubert was given early leave on December 21, 2016.

Eintracht Braunschweig

On October 11, 2018, Schubert took over the third division team from Eintracht Braunschweig as the successor to the released Henrik Pedersen , who was in last place with 8 points after 11 match days. He signed a contract with a term until June 30, 2021. Even under Schubert, the team could not improve and finished the first half of the season with 13 points in last place, with the gap to a non-relegation place was 7 points. In the winter transfer period, the squad was changed significantly. After a significant increase in performance in the second half of the season, in which they finished 6th in the second half of the season table with 32 points, the team achieved relegation on the last match day.

Holstein Kiel

For the 2019/20 season , Schubert took over the coaching position at the second division Holstein Kiel as the successor to Tim Walter, who had switched to VfB Stuttgart . He signed a contract in Kiel until June 30, 2021. Schubert was released on September 15 , when the team was in 16th place with 5 points after 6 matchdays.
