The origins of Volksbank Hellweg eG as an amalgamation of several domestic banks go back to the 19th century. The name "Volksbank Hellweg eG" arose from the 1999 merger between what was then Volksbank Soest eG and Volksbank Werl-Welver eG. During this time, the credit institution was characterized by great growth.
In 2000 the business area was expanded through the merger with Volksbank Ense eG. Most recently it was Volksbank Warstein-Belecke eG that merged with the growing Volksbank Hellweg eG in 2003. Today Volksbank Hellweg eG has a total of 22 branches, 15 of which are staffed branches.

Social work
Volksbank Hellweg eG was the first cooperative bank in North Rhine-Westphalia to set up a community foundation, the Hellweg Region community foundation . It was founded in 2002 and is committed to the social community. The full-time managing director of the community foundation is the foundation advisor of Volksbank Hellweg eG Klaus Wehmeyer. The funding areas range from science and research through art, the environment and youth welfare to upbringing and education. In the early years, the focus of funding was on art and culture. Since 2006 she has increasingly turned to social projects. The founding assets of 61,000 euros have meanwhile increased to around 2.19 million euros (including 16 partner foundations and three foundation funds, as of December 2012).
