The cooperative association - Association of Regions e. V. is a German auditing and advisory association, educational institution and lobbyist based in Frankfurt am Main . The association has 2,619 member cooperatives in 14 federal states (as of 2019).

history

The cooperative association has its roots in the Association of Acquisition and Economic Cooperatives on the Middle Rhine, which was founded on May 25, 1862. V. zu Wiesbaden and in the Association of Credit Cooperatives of Rhineland, Westphalia, Lippe and Waldeck, which was founded in the same year. It is the oldest regional association of the cooperative organization.

Over the years, regional associations have emerged across Germany, which the cooperatives initially voluntarily joined and subjected to testing. In view of the increasing number of bankruptcies of cooperatives at the beginning of the 20th century, every cooperative has since been legally obliged to belong to an auditing association.

Many of the regional associations have merged with the cooperative association over time in order to strengthen the range of services for the member cooperatives. Mergers took place in 1992 with the Genossenschaftsverband Kurhessen-Thüringen e. V., Kassel, and in 2008 with the Genossenschaftsverband Norddeutschland e. V., Hanover. The merger with the Mitteldeutscher Genossenschaftsverband e. V., Chemnitz, was decided in March 2013 with retroactive effect from October 1, 2012.

In 2017, the Genossenschaftsverband e. V. with the Rheinisch-Westfälischer Genossenschaftsverband e. V. to the Cooperative Association - Association of Regions e. V. The members of both predecessor associations approved this merger at the end of April 2017.
