RAVeL route in the west of the Ardennes between Chimay and Froidchapelle

RAVeL is the abbreviation for Réseau Autonome de Voies Lentes , meaning “independent network of slow paths”. This designation stands for a program in the Walloon Region of Belgium to make towpaths , disused railway lines and other car-free paths usable as a hiking , riding and cycling network . In the system of traffic planning, RAVeL forms a third road traffic network alongside - in official texts "after" - the RGG (motorways and expressways) and the RESI (roads for both motorized and non-motorized traffic).

So that the user groups addressed by the RAVeL do not interfere with each other, symbols on the individual route sections indicate which types of traffic are permitted in each case. The network of paths will be set up on disused towpaths on canals and rivers as well as on railway lines. These slow-moving routes are only accessible to pedestrians, cyclists, skaters, the disabled and horse riders. The maximum gradient is two percent. The RAVeL lines 1 to 5 in Wallonia are between 45 and 330 kilometers long. There are several good connections with the LF network of the Flemish-speaking part of the country. In the German-Belgian border area the route of the Vennbahn is used (RAVeL lines 48 and 47). These routes have been completed.

The first sections of the RAVel network were inaugurated in 1995. Several routes are currently being expanded step by step. The routes are called lignes . Many bear the line numbers of the disused railway lines on which they run.

If the paths were initially paved with natural materials (Pre'Ravel), in recent years they have been paved with asphalt, as can be seen, for example, on the various sections of line 47.
