Landen is a town in Flemish Belgium near Leuven . The administrative district around this city also bears this name. The city and the administrative district of Landen are located in the province of Flemish Brabant near the province of Liège (Liege). The city has 15,951 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019); the area of the municipality is 54.05 km².

Pippin the Elder “von Landen” was probably born in Landen. In any case, he had extensive family property between the coal forest and the central Meuse in eastern Belgium. Karlmann (von Landen-Austrasien) is sometimes listed as the father of Pippin. Also Pippin's daughter, St. Begga is named after this town, in contrast to her sister Gertrude , who is also holy and is more often called after the Nivelles monastery .

The station landing on the railway line Brussels-Liege was once a hub of regional transport. Of the three branch lines that started here, only the line to Hasselt is still in operation today .
