Listen to Linkebeek ^{? / i} is a Belgian municipality in the Flanders region with 4671 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). It is located in the south of Brussels and borders directly on the Brussels capital region . The city center of the capital is about 8 kilometers (km) north.

The next motorway exits are at Beersel and Ruisbroek on the A 7 / E19 .

Linkebeek has a regional train station and Brussels National Airport, close to the capital and around 17 km north-west of the municipality as the crow flies , is an international airport.

Politics and language dispute

Linkebeek became a center of disputes in the context of the Flemish-Walloon conflict , since since 1954 it has been one of the six facility communities in the periphery of the Brussels-Capital Region in which French is on an equal footing: at that time, about 40% of the people in Linkebeek spoke Residents French, meanwhile the Francophones are in the majority.

Because of violations of the language law, the Flemish Interior Minister Liesbeth Homans of the Flemish Nationalists ( Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie ) refused to appoint Damien Thiéry and Yves Ghequiere, who were elected by the local council, for many years. Damien Thiéry (FDF, now DéFI ) was elected and acting mayor from 2007 to 2015, but was never officially appointed. The third elected candidate, Valérie Geeurickx, was only confirmed in office by the Minister of the Interior on July 10, 2017 and sworn in on July 19. She was elected to the local council as a former party member of the FDF (now DéFI), but has since left the party and officiates as an independent.
