Boortmeerbeek is a Belgian municipality in the Flanders region with 12,516 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). It is located on the left bank of the Dijle 8 kilometers southeast of Mechelen and consists of the main town and the district of Hever .

Leuven is km southeast, Brussels about 20 km southwest and Antwerp 28 km northwest.

The next motorway exits are at Weerde and Mechelen on the A 1 / E 19 and at Wilsele and Löwen on the A 2 .

The XX. convoy

The place became famous after the Second World War through the attack on the 20th deportation train to Auschwitz , which three young members of the Resistance from Brussels perpetrated on April 19, 1943. At Boortmeerbeek, they stopped a transport train with 1631 Belgian deported Jews and Roma destined for Auschwitz from the SS assembly camp Mechelen , broke open a wagon locked with barbed wire under fire from the German guards and were able to free 17 people. Other (231 in total) people were able to free themselves with smuggled tools, 115 of them managed to escape and survive under the German occupation, which continued for almost two years. On May 19, 1943, the Warsaw Ghetto uprising happened by chance .
