Kortenberg is a municipality in the central part of Dijleland in the province of Flemish Brabant in the Kingdom of Belgium .

history

In 1095 the Bishop of Cambrai recognized the existence of the religious community on the Curtenbergh, which is still regarded as the founding date of Kortenberg. In 1222 the monastery brothers moved from "Heuvel" (the Curtenbergh) to "Minneveld", where the Abbey of Kortenberg is still located today.

Cores

In addition to Kortenberg itself, the community consists of the sub-communities Erps-Kwerps , Everberg and Meerbeek . In the south of Everberg lies the village of Vrebos. The village of Schoonaarde is located between Erps and Meerbeek near the train station.

Kortenberg Abbey

The Kortenberg Abbey dates back to 1222. It has a long and eventful history of arson, looting and reconstruction. The oldest part still standing is the gate building with the Gothic entrance gate, built at the beginning of the 17th century and the brewery from 1732. The traditional knight's hall and the baroque chapel date from 1934. The abbey, property of the Archdiocese of Mechlin-Brussels , was placed under monument protection on February 14, 2005.

The municipal area is crossed by the E40 / A3 motorway. However, Kortenberg does not have its own junction. Junctions 21 in Sterrebeek and 22 in Bertem are the closest. The national road N2 crosses Kortenberg in the center and, along with the E40, is an important connection to Brussels .

Kortenberg has a train station on the Brussels – Liège line (line 36). The village of Erps-Kwerps also has a train station on the same line.

Kortenberg is a hub for a number of important bus routes operated by the Flemish transport company De Lijn . Lines 351, 352 and 358 all connect Leuven with Brussels via different routes . The village of Vrebos is connected to Brussels by line 318. The 271 bus from Brussels to Kampenhout goes to the village of Erps-Kwerps. The new START initiative connects Leuven via Kortenberg with the Brussels-Zaventem Airport and the industrial area Brucargo with the bus routes 651 and 652 .

education

Each of the four sub-communities has its own primary school. The oldest existing school is the Mater Dei Free Primary School in Erps-Kwerps, which was founded in 1816. Further education is only offered in the larger neighboring cities.
