Halle ( French Hal ) is a city in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant . It is the southernmost city in the Dutch-speaking region.
geography
Halle is located on the Senne , the city center on its left bank. The river is accompanied and crossed here by the Charleroi-Brussels Canal . On the hills to the east of these waters, the settlement area from Halle hardly interrupts the transition into the Greater Brussels agglomeration . To the southeast belongs to the urban area of the Hallerbos forest , one of the remains of the coal forest (Silva Carbonaria), which in ancient times stretched from the center of today's Flanders to the Meuse . To the west, the city borders on the fertile, hilly Pajottenland . This historical granary of Brussels is still predominantly agricultural today.
Sub -municipalities are Halle, Buizingen , Lembeek , Breedhout , Essenbeek , Sint-Rochus and Hondzocht .
Buildings
The high-Gothic St. Martin's Basilica was built between 1341 and 1467 and houses works of art donated by high-ranking statesmen: a reliquary of Louis XI. of France (1423–1483), the St. Martin's altar in 1533 by Emperor Charles V , a monstrance of Henry VIII of England and the Mainz chalice .
The town hall (Stadhuis) is a Renaissance building from 1611. The former Jesuit college was built in 1650.
