Dilbeek is a Belgian municipality in the province of Flemish Brabant with 42,847 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). It has an area of ​​41.18 km² and a population density of 1040 inhabitants per km².

Dilbeek adjoins the Brussels metropolitan area immediately to the west . While the sub-municipalities Dilbeek, Itterbeek and Groot-Bijgaarden have already merged with the Brussels metropolitan area, Schepdaal, Sint-Martens-Bodegem, Sint-Ulriks-Kapelle, Sint-Anna-Pede and Sint-Gertrudis-Pede are small villages that were able to retain their rural character - despite the enormous urban sprawl in the region.

history

Dilbeek was first mentioned in 1075 as Dedelbeccha . Since a merger in 1977, the municipality (Groß-) Dilbeek has consisted of the central town of Dilbeek itself and the districts of Itterbeek, Schepdaal, Sint-Martens-Bodegem, Sint-Ulriks-Kapelle and Groot-Bijgaarden.
