Richárd Count Guyon (* 1803 in Walcot near Bath , England ; †  October 12, 1856 in Üsküdar , Constantinople , now Istanbul ) was a general .

Life

origin

Richard de Beaufré, Count of Guyon, came from a French aristocratic family who had emigrated to England. In 1828 Guyon joined the British Legion in Portugal and fought there against Dom Miguel . In 1832 he became an officer in the Austrian service and took his leave as first lieutenant of the hussars .

In the service of the Hungarian uprising

During the Hungarian Revolution he joined the newly established army of Kossuth and distinguished himself under FML Janos Moga on October 30, 1848 as Honved Major in the Battle of Schwechat during the attack on Mannswörth . On December 23, 1848 he fought at Tyrnau against the imperial troops under FML Simunich and fought his way to the besieged Komorn with a few hussars . On the day of the First Battle of Komorn (April 26, 1849) he contributed a lot to the victory of the Hungarians, for which he was appointed general. On July 1, he captured the fortress of Arad and on July 14, forced the imperial troops under Jelačić to retreat in the Battle of Hegyes . On the other hand, he was beaten at Mosorin and then covered the escape of Kossuth at Orșova with the Italian and Polish legions .

Ottoman military service

Guyon and his troops also transferred to Turkish territory in September 1849 , became an Ottoman general and commanded as Kurschid Pasha in Damascus , where he put down the revolt of the Old Turks in 1850.

During the War of the Orient in 1854 Guyon was assigned to the Turkish Corps sent to the Caucasus as Chief of Staff. During the siege of Kars he was unable to achieve any success as chief of the general staff of the incompetent Akhmed Pasha, was recalled and has lived in Constantinople, today's Istanbul since then . After an unsuccessful attempt at relief by Omar Pascha , cholera and shortages in the food supply forced the garrison town of Kars to surrender on November 29, 1855.

Richard Guyon died of cholera on October 12, 1856 in Üsküdar , Constantinople .
