Komorn ( Hungarian Komárom and Slovak Komárno ) is the German name of two cities that are located on the two opposite banks of the Danube in Hungary and Slovakia and arose from the division of this city. The two cities are connected by a railroad bridge and a road bridge.

The historical center and the fortress are located at the point where the Váh flows into the Danube, i.e. in the Slovak part. The fortress was important in the Kingdom of Hungary (later Austria-Hungary ) as it could never be forcibly conquered by the Ottomans (nec arte nec marte) . The fortress was built in the 16th century as a sister building to Raab fortress through the reconstruction of a medieval castle (first source evidence 1218). The engineers responsible were Pietro Ferrabosco and Daniel Specklin . A “New Fortress” was built next to the old one in the 17th century. Both have been preserved to this day.

The Ingmánd Fort of Komorn

During the Hungarian War of Independence , Komorn Fortress was the scene of several battles between the main Austrian armies under Feldzeugmeister Haynau and the Hungarian insurgent army of General Artur Görgey in the summer of 1849 . In the besieged fortress there was a strong garrison under General Georg Klapka until the Hungarian surrender , which surrendered on October 4, 1849. The future builder Franz Glaser sen. was in 1850 in Komarno as Fortifikations mason polish the Austria-Hungarian genius troops stationed.

The division of Komorn took place in 1919/20 through the drawing of the border between Hungary and the newly formed Czechoslovak state. The northern part of Komorn was occupied by Czechoslovak legionaries in 1919 . In the peace treaty of Trianon on June 4, 1920, this division was recognized under international law, the more important north (where the historic city center and the Komorn fortress are located) was annexed to the newly founded Czecho-Slovakia . The smaller, less significant part of Komorn ( ung . Komárom) with the suburb of Szőny , which was annexed in 1977 and south of the Danube, remained with Hungary.

In Roman times, the area of today's Komárom was the legionary camp Brigetio with an important civil town.
