Pietro Ferrabosco (* around 1512 in Laino near Como ; † after 1588 ) was an Italian painter, fortress builder and architect who worked in Austria and Hungary .

Life

Ferrabosco, who came from northern Italy, was the son of master mason Martino Ferrabosco. From 1542 he worked for the Habsburgs in Austria and Hungary, where he built numerous Renaissance buildings over the next forty years . At first he served as a soldier and war painter in Hungary. In 1551 he was court painter to Emperor Ferdinand I in Vienna . Its exact role and function in Prague in the following years remains unclear. After he had mastered the difficult task of fortifying the Danube in Vienna, he was awarded the Imperial Knighthood (Ferrabosco di Lagno) in 1556 . In 1559 he complained to the emperor about his low salary and that he had to neglect painting because of his many building tasks. He applied unsuccessfully for the post of building superintendent in Vienna because he never learned the German language. In 1572 an imperial letter of recommendation gave him honorary citizenship in Como. In 1588 he submitted his resignation to Archduke Ernst and returned to Lake Como with his father, wife and servants . After that there is no more news from him.
