Szigetvár [ ˈsiɡɛtvaːr ] (German island castle , Croatian: Siget ) is a small town in the southern Hungarian county of Baranya with 10,868 inhabitants (2011).
The castle of the same name was the scene of the battle of Szigetvár in 1566 , the outcome of which was the conquest of the fortress by the Turks and which killed more than 20,000 combatants. The Ottoman Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent died during the battle , but not as a result of the fighting.
It was not until 1689 that the city could be recaptured from the Hungarians .
Attractions
The castle, the remains of which had been razed by the Turks, was restored after 1960.
The former Ali Pasha mosque on Zrinyi Square dates back to the Turkish occupation , originally built in 1569 with two minarets, which was converted into a baroque Roman Catholic church in 1788 . On the former battlefield on the outskirts of the city, a park of the Hungarian-Turkish friendship was created in 1996 with a monument showing the two opponents of the battle of 1566.
Springs with 63 degrees hot salt and iodine-containing water feed a thermal bath , which is said to provide relief from rheumatic complaints.
