Le Mas-d'Agenais is located on a hill above the Garonne River . Because of the poor navigability , the Canal latéral à la Garonne (German: Garonne-Seitenkanal ) runs parallel to this .
history
Beginning with the Roman era, the town has seen all the great upheavals in history.
- in the 13th century stronghold of the Cathars , during the crusade against the Albigensians ,
- in the 14th and 15th centuries, owned by England during the Hundred Years War ,
- afterwards became French and Catholic again,
- Taken and plundered in the 16th century by Admiral de Coligny in the Third Huguenot War,
- captured in the 17th century by the army of the insurgents " Fronde des Princes" ,
- recaptured a year later by the royal troops,
- After the French Revolution in the 18th century, calm has finally returned.

- The panel painting was discovered in the early 1980s by the art historian and philologist Veit Stelter from Braunschweig, who was on vacation there and recognized the previously unknown origin of the painting while visiting the church. At the time, the picture was unsecured.
