Third Huguenot War

The Third Huguenot War ( 1568 - 1570 ) broke, just six months after the end of the Second War Huguenots and led for the first time into larger battles between French Protestants, the Huguenots and the Catholic party. In the Battle of Jarnac , the Huguenots were defeated on March 13, 1569 , and their leader, Louis I of Bourbon-Condé, was captured and shot. The nominal winner of Jarnac was the king's brother, later Henry III. The new Huguenot leader Admiral Coligny had to limit himself to the defensive and could not prevent another defeat at Moncontour . Warmonger on the Catholic side was the young Duke Heinrich von Guise , who not only wanted to restore his family's previous political influence, but also wanted to avenge the murder of his father, Duke Francis I of Guise .

The war ended with the Peace of Saint-Germain (1570) , which roughly confirmed the earlier peace treaty of Amboise .
