Castelnau-sur-Gupie ( Occitan Castèthnau de Gupia ) is a place and a multi hamlets and farmsteads community with 890 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the southern French department of Lot-et-Garonne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .
location
The place Castelnau-sur-Gupie is located on the north bank of the river Gupie about eight kilometers north of Marmande at an altitude of about 43 m above sea level. d. M. The climate is mild and is largely determined by the Atlantic; Rain falls throughout the year.

The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the loss of jobs due to the mechanization of agriculture led to a continuous population decline in the first half of the 20th century, which has been reversed since the 1990s.
economy
For centuries, the residents of the community lived on the produce of their fields and gardens, self-sufficient ; cattle breeding and viticulture were also carried out. Craftsmen, small traders and service providers settled in the village. Since the 1960s, some of the vacant houses, but also new buildings, have been used as holiday apartments ( gîtes ) . The municipality has been part of the Côtes du Marmandais wine-growing region since 1990 .
history
The region was already settled in ancient times; the Romans probably brought the wine here too.
In the Middle Ages, the area between England and France was controversial and only finally became French after the end of the Hundred Years War (1337-1453). Later the area belonged to the historical province of Agenais .
Attractions
- The Saint-Front church in the middle of the cemetery is dedicated to St. Fronto of Périgueux was consecrated and was built from poorly hewn stones in the 13th century on the site of a former commander of the Knights Templar ; in the 15th century it was enlarged. The church structure shows simple Gothic tracery windows on the apse and nave . The high bell tower with an openwork pointed stone helmet was built in the 19th century instead of a demolished bell gable .
- The market hall (hall) , resting on wooden pillars with brick plinths , was built in 1880.
- On the outskirts there are two covered washing areas ( lavoirs ) .
