Hautesvignes is a French municipality with 177 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Lot-et-Garonne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Marmande and the canton of Tonneins (until 2015: canton of Marmande-Est ).

The name is derived from the Latin altis vineis and indicates the geographical location of the village and the cultivation of wine.

The inhabitants are called Hautesvignais and Hautesvignaises .

Hautesvignes is about 15 km southeast of Marmande in the historic province of Agenais .

Hautesvignes lies in the catchment area of the Garonne River .

The Canaule , a tributary of the Trec de la Greffière , crosses the territory of the commune along with its tributaries,

  • the Croze and
  • the Rieucaud with its tributary,
    • the Ruisseau de Picanty, which rises in Hautesvignes.

In addition, two tributaries of the Tolzac , the Ruisseau de Chavignac and the Ruisseau de Barboutan, have their source in Hautesvignes.

history

Archaeological studies have shown that the area has been settled since late antiquity at the latest . A cross-shaped brooch made of bronze dates from this period.

In 1303 the English King Edward I founded the bastide of Hautesvignes. The village stretched out on the bottom of a moth from the 11th or 12th century. However, the development of the bastide did not advance and so Hautesvignes kept the village character.

In 1621 the French King Louis XIII persecuted . a campaign against the Protestants . Before he wanted to besiege the villages of Clairac and Tonneins , he stayed for a short time at the castle of Hautesvignes.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a peak of 490 by the middle of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community fell to around 100 inhabitants with short recovery phases by the 1970s, before a phase of moderate growth began, the continues today.

Attractions

Parish Church of Saint-Etienne-de-Bernac

Its original foundations probably go back to at least the 13th century, when Hautesvignes was first mentioned. The church was partially rebuilt in the 16th century after it was damaged by Protestant troops. The bell tower was rebuilt around 1763 . Around 1871 the church was again largely rebuilt and equipped with a ribbed vault . The rectory was added to the west side at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Parts of the building were inscribed as Monument historique in 1910 .

Ruins of the medieval moth

The moth is in the hamlet of Lamouthe and dates from the 11th or 12th century. Their church Saint-Michel-de-Malbourguet served as a branch church until 1707, but subsequently fell into disrepair. Today's farm uses the residential and outbuildings from the 18th century.

Castle ruins

It was first mentioned in 1279. The middle masonry association dates from the 13th or 14th century. Around 1940 the castle was destroyed.

Hautesvignes is crossed by Route départementale 299, which connects the municipality to the west via Gontaud-de-Nogaret with Marmande.
