Toponymy

The community, mentioned in 1289 as Argentem , takes its name from the Latin word argentum (money / gold), together with the Gallic word magos . This word first referred to a single field, then a market place, and finally the village that formed around the market place. The name is identical in Gaskognisch. The inhabitants are called Argentonnais .
