The town hall of Castelmoron in the Solar Castle

Castelmoron-sur-Lot is a municipality with 1748 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in France in the department of Lot-et-Garonne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It belongs to the canton of Tonneins (until 2015: canton of Castelmoron-sur-Lot ).

geography

Castelmoron-sur-Lot is located on the lower reaches of the Lot , about 25 km from its confluence with the Garonne , near Aiguillon . Just above Castelmoron, a new weir system with a storage height of ten meters was built at the end of the 1990s , creating a large reservoir above the weir that is used by the neighboring communities for water tourism. The municipality of Castelmoron has also built the Port Lalande leisure complex, where there is now a marina for sports boats and houseboats , as well as a holiday village.

history

  • In a damp and swampy place, called "Mauron", near a bend in the Lot, a monastery was first founded, around which the first settlers settled. In the 13th century, the place around the castle already bore the name Castelmoron (Castle of the Marshes).
  • At the beginning of the Hundred Years War , the city was captured by the English troops of Count de Derby thanks to a ruse . This handed it over to Chevalier de Caumont, who was on site. The feudal rule remained with this family until the middle of the 17th century. In 1435 the city was recaptured by the French and its fortifications razed.
  • In the 16th century Castelmoron became one of the Calvinist pioneers in the Agenais . His Reformed Church was founded in 1559. Thanks to an agreement made between Catholics and Protestants in 1609, their temple was spared during the wars of religion, but then initially banned and released for demolition in 1693. The revocation of the Edict of Nantes (October 18, 1685) provoked the emigration of large numbers of Protestants.
  • In the 18th century, shipping on the Lot gained increasing importance. Numerous ships left the port of Castelmoron and carried wine and flour to Bordeaux and from there to northern Europe and the French West Indies . But from the late 18th century onwards, the loss of the colonies of America put an end to that trading horizon for good.
  • The economic expansion that began under the July monarchy provoked profound changes in the second half of the 19th century, which gave Castelmoron a new face in contrast to its former medieval shape. In 1845 a suspension bridge was built over the Lot and the old church from the 13th century was demolished. The new church (the current one) was built in 1852 on the site of the former cemetery.
  • Around this time the old castle was completely changed by its new owner Félix Solar , son of a family of Portuguese-Jewish origin. The new architecture, which contains numerous wooden structures (galleries and balconies), was inspired by the Alhambra in Granada and the Mosque of Córdoba and in it mimics the Moorish casino of Arcachon . The Solar Castle was bought by the community council in 1902 and used as the town hall.
