history

In the 19th century, a copper shrine was found that contained jewelry, precious stones, bars and coins from around 270 and thus proves a settlement during this period.

Labretonie stepped onto the stage of history in 1217 when the village was devastated during the Albigensian Crusade . Despite its relatively small size, the village had three parish churches over the centuries, which shows the importance of the church .

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a high of around 515 by the middle of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community fell to around 160 inhabitants during short recovery phases by the turn of the millennium, before a phase of moderate growth began.

Parish Church of Saint Martin

The former parish church was on the site of the cemetery. It was in a state of disrepair when it was demolished at the beginning of the 19th century and rebuilt according to plans by the architect of the Dupont arrondissement. Its current location was made available by Jacques Delfieux in 1871. The work was carried out by the entrepreneur Jean Roumanès under the supervision of Jacques Delfieux from 1872 to 1876. The helmet of the bell tower , which was built in 1882, had to be repaired by Etienne Constantin in 1894. However, the structure showed signs of brittleness. That is why anchors were installed in 1901 under the direction of the architect Touron from Marmande to increase the stability .

The church is structured in a nave with a nave and two side chapels that form a false transept, an apse with cut corners and a free-standing bell tower with a porch. The walls are made of quarry stone made of tuff , those of the bell tower are made of ashlar .

Inside the church, capitals are decorated with foliage . The names of Pastor Ada and the Bishop of Agen , Hector-Albert Chaulet-d'Oultremont, who were in their offices at the time of the new building, have been written on keystones . The first keystone shows a square and a compass , the second the coat of arms of Bishop Hector-Albert Chaulet-d'Oultremont, the third the coat of arms of Pope Pius IX. , the fourth a ciborium and a missal , that of the choir finally the Agnus Dei .

None of the fixtures and fittings from the previous church were used in the new building, as the roof of the old building had collapsed before 1806 and from then on they were exposed to the weather. The entire equipment of today's parish church was accordingly procured anew shortly after the construction. A new main altar by the marble cutter Charles Rigo was inaugurated in 1997.

Thirteen stained glass windows are works by the glass painter Joseph Villiet from Bordeaux , which he created in 1873.

In the lancets of the ogival windows they show the following motifs and biblical people:

Parish Church of Saint-Jean

The church with its now abandoned cemetery is located in the hamlet of Saint-Jean on a slight hill. The walls of the choir and the north side of the nave are pierced by narrow, round light openings. This suggests a building in the 12th or early 13th century. The walls of the apse are made of quarry stone made of tuff, those of the nave are made of ashlar. The west facade has a bell gable at its top and is reinforced with two buttresses . Its recessed arched entrance portal is decorated with rod ornamentation. The facade was created during a restoration in the 17th century. Repairs have recently been made to the north and south walls of the nave. Inside, dazzling columns separate the choir from the nave.

Parish Church of Saint Vincent

The church is on a step near a spring and the old road from Saint-Barthélemy-d'Agenais to Verteuil-d'Agenais . The western entrance portal shows with the rod ornamentation of the archivolts that the church was built no earlier than the 16th century. The walls are made of ashlar made of tuff with an outer cladding of tuff and bricks arranged like a checkerboard on the outer wall of the nave. The apse has cut corners. The west facade is reinforced by two buttresses and crowned with a triangular bell gable with an opening for the bell. The years "1764" and "1765", like various other graffiti, are engraved on stones on the facade and the north side of the choir. The bronze bell from 1831 was bought in 1834, only a little later after the building was repaired. The tiled roof of the church has collapsed and the sacristy to the south has been destroyed.
