Life

Jean Trembley was the son of Jacques-André Trembley (born October 8, 1714 in Geneva, † April 24, 1763 ibid), professor and rector at the University of Geneva and his wife Anne (1728–1763), a daughter of the doctor Pierre Colladon (1681-1740). His uncle was the naturalist Abraham Trembley (1710–1784) and his cousin, the politician, Jean-Charles Trembley (1764–1846).

Jean Trembley married on November 24, 1790 in Vich Marie-Elisabeth (born October 24, 1765), a daughter of Marc-Etienne de Ribeaupierre (1723-1785). They had two children together:

  • Louise Trembley (* 1792);
  • Julie Trembley (* 1795).

He began studying law at the University of Geneva; but after a short time already the subject of studies and then studied, as an assistant under the direction of Jacques-André Mallet , Director of the Geneva Observatory , astronomy , plus philosophy and psychology , heard here he lectures by Charles Bonnet .

In 1767 he received his doctorate under Horace Bénédict de Saussure with a dissertation on reproduction.

In 1786 he traveled from Paris to northern Europe and in 1794, fleeing the French Revolution , which had meanwhile reached Geneva , moved to Berlin , where he stayed until the beginning of 1807 and then settled in France .

Scientific work

Jean Trembley contributed to the development of differential equations and the calculus of probability and solved physical and mechanical problems with the help of geometry . He also published psychological treatises, the most original of which appeared in the negotiations of the Academy of Sciences in 1781 and concerned the usefulness and further development of psychology.

Philosophical work

Jean Trembley was a characteristic figure of the Enlightenment in Switzerland and he succeeded in building bridges between the French and the German cultural area by presenting a work by the German philosopher Johann Heinrich Lambert in French. He postulated the moral and cognitive importance of empirical facts in mathematics , physics , psychology, aesthetics , theology and politics and took up the fight against prejudices that, in his opinion, lay in systems thinking .
