A Pallas nagy lexikona (German: The Great Pallas Lexicon ) was the first Hungarian encyclopedia that was not based on a translation from another language. It was published by A Pallas Irodalmi és Nyomdai Rt. From 1893 to 1897. In 1900 two supplementary volumes appeared. At that time, the encyclopedia comprised 18 volumes with over 150,000 articles. More than 300 authors were involved in its creation.

Authors

The authors included renowned Hungarian scientists, some of whom were members of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences . So who among other Bernát Alexander, Donát Bánki , Jenő Cholnoky, Károly Csemegi, Kornél Divald, Ignác Goldziher , Loránd Eötvös , József Kürschák , Henrik Marczali, Ferenc Nagy, László Négyesy, Gyula Pasteiner, Jenő Péterfi, József Szinnyei, Gusztáv Thirring and Ármin Vámbéry contributed to the creation of the encyclopedia under the editorial direction of József Bokor.

Further development

In 1911 Révai Testvérek Rt. Took over the lexicon and it then appeared under the name Révai nagy lexikona . It achieved great popularity in Hungary in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1935 the last edition of the encyclopedia appeared in 21 volumes. In 1998 the lexicon was completely digitized by Arcanum Adatbázis Kft and sold on CD-ROM . The digitized articles of the lexicon are now freely available on the Internet at Magyar Elektronikus Könyvtár (MEK) .
