Donát Bánki

Donát Bánki (born June 6, 1859 in Bánk as Donát Löwinger ; † August 1, 1922 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian mechanical engineer and university professor . He is best known as the inventor of a gasifier and a water turbine .

Live and act

Löwinger's family name was Magyarized after its place of origin Bánk (today Bakonybánk in the Kisbér district ) . Donát Bánki received his degree in mechanical engineering from the Royal Hungarian Joseph University of Technology and Economics in Budapest . In 1881 he was an assistant at the university and subsequently an intern in the machine factory of the Royal Hungarian State Railways . After working as a designer at Ganz & Co. from 1882 on , he became chief engineer there, where he mainly worked on the development of gas and petroleum engines.

Together with János Csonka (1852-1939) he developed the Bánki-Csonka four-stroke engine and, as part of it, a carburetor. As a series-produced stationary engine, the internal combustion engine was to replace the steam engine in small-scale businesses; The motor plow developed by András Mechwart was also equipped with it. To increase the compression ratio and thus the efficiency , Bánki used water injection , for which he received a patent in 1898.

In 1899 he was appointed professor specializing in hydraulic machines , compressors and steam engines . The Bánki turbine , which he invented in 1917, was a significant advance in the development of small hydropower plants .
