Mechanical engineer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mechanical engineer is the professional title for an engineer of mechanical engineering after completing a degree in Engineering .

Development engineer in computer-aided construction
Engineers at a meeting
Mechanical engineer assessing a prototype
Mechanical engineers examine a component
Mechanical engineers in the test field

Depending on the specialization in the course, the areas of responsibility of a mechanical engineer include not only classic mechanical engineering disciplines, such as the construction and development of machines and systems, but also topics from vehicle technology, precision engineering, materials science, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, mechanics, control engineering and other specialist areas.

It is the task of the mechanical engineer to cope with new problems from his specialist area using known or unknown, systematic solution paths and strategies and to document the solutions.

Mechanical engineers usually have a degree in general mechanical engineering. The training lasts at least 6–7 semesters for a Bachelor's degree and 3–4 semesters for the subsequent Master’s degree. The training consists of mathematical , scientific and engineering principles. Mathematics serves as an aid for problem description and solution, and the basics of physics and chemistry support the understanding of the general relationships. The computer science plays in the study for several years a large role, as in many areas of mechanical engineering in addition to CAD and FEA and CFD apply.

The core of the training, however, continues to be the engineering subjects of mechanics , materials science , construction theory , electrical engineering , thermodynamics , fluid mechanics and measurement, control and regulation technology . All subsequent specializations build on them, and the approaches and procedures used in them form the basis for coping with later tasks.

In addition to detailed knowledge about machines, components and materials, the causal relationships and ways of solving problems are conveyed. The budding engineers are taught to think in terms of systems, to recognize them and to break them down. In this way, highly complex systems such as power plants , automobiles or aircraft can be viewed in detail, optimized and later manufactured as a whole.

Today the course is usually completed with a Bachelor of Science / Master of Science or Bachelor of Engineering / Master of Engineering and then entitles to use the academic degree Bachelor / Master of Science (B.Sc. / M.Sc.) or Bachelor / Master of Engineering (B.Eng. / M.Eng.). The degree of graduate engineer (Dipl.-Ing.) (Degree obtained at a university or technical college) or Dipl.-Ing. (FH) (degree obtained from a university of applied sciences) will continue to be awarded, but due to the Bologna Process it is seldom possible in Germany to start a diploma course in mechanical engineering. That of vocational colleges awarded Dipl.-Ing. (BA) is not an academic degree, but a state name. Mechanical engineers with a doctorate in Germany receive the academic doctoral degree Dr.-Ing. , the international equivalent of this is a doctorate with the Ph.D. , possibly expanded to include the respective subject area.

Mechanical engineers work primarily in mechanical engineering, plant and vehicle construction companies and their suppliers or in service companies such as B. engineering offices. But engineers are also employed in research at universities and colleges. In addition, many engineers are self-employed with engineering services or their own businesses .

Mechanical engineers work in companies in a wide variety of fields. These range from sales, purchasing, development, manufacturing, maintenance to logistics or even marketing. In addition to the engineering position (development engineer), they can take on the positions of managing director, division, department, group, team or project manager.

You can also find work at universities, technical colleges and technical schools in the areas of research, teaching and development.
