occupation

Essential Killing (German: necessary or essential killing ) is a political thriller by the Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski from 2010 with the actors Vincent Gallo and Emmanuelle Seigner . Essential Killing premiered on September 6, 2010 at the 2010 Venice Film Festival.

action

In an Afghan desert, a suspected Taliban fighter is captured by US troops, then interrogated and tortured using waterboarding . Then he is to be taken to a secret prison in Europe. However, as a result of an accident, he manages to escape into the snow-covered forests of Poland. From then on he fights for his survival in an unusually cold environment. He is chased through the forest by the Americans with helicopters, dogs and search teams and escapes them. On his escape and when he encounters forest workers and other locals, he can barely survive each time - but often at the expense of other people. Severely wounded, he finally finds some help from a lonely woman living in the middle of the forest. She then sends him away on horseback. The film ends with the sight of the unoccupied horse, stained with blood by the rider - the man's fate is obvious.

criticism

“The film describes the chain of acts of violence beyond political partisanship phenomenologically as part of an ominous momentum of its own. Thanks to his precise main actor, he succeeds in creating expressive, because persistently disturbing, scenes that turn the escape drama into a suggestive accusation against any form of inhumanity. "

additional

  • The director Jerzy Skolimowski said about the film that it was not clear whether the hunted was a terrorist or an innocent.
