Vincent Gallo
Vincent Gallo (born April 11, 1961 or 1962 in Buffalo , New York ) is an American actor, director, musician, photographer and painter who prefers to work in the artistic underground .
biography
Gallo's parents are Sicilians by birth who immigrated to the United States before he was born. Gallo says he started playing drums and guitar when he was 9 years old. He was initially active in a number of local bands in Buffalo ; he first appeared in public after he had moved to New York at the age of 16 , in the late 1970s in a band called Gray , whose members included Jean-Michel Basquiat , a painter from Andy Warhol's circle who died at an early age . belonged to. Gallo played himself in Julian Schnabel's 1996 film Basquiat . He appeared with Gray for the first time in larger clubs like the CBGB’s . After the band split up, he joined various projects, including a band called Bohack , with whom he released his first album in 1983. After this group split up a short time later, he devoted himself increasingly to film, both as an actor and as a composer of film music. In 1998 he published his first directorial work, the highly acclaimed Buffalo 66 with Christina Ricci and Mickey Rourke , whose screenplay he had also written and in which he can be seen in the lead role. The film was a great success at festivals, and Gallo received a nomination for the Grand Jury Prize of the Sundance Film Festival . The fact that he never won anything at this festival led to a number of controversial statements by Gallos, such as "I want to make a film with a disabled, black Jewish lesbian as the protagonist so that I can win a film award at Sundance" . At the beginning of the 21st century he returned to music and released three albums in quick succession. His second film The Brown Bunny (2003) was awarded a FIPRESCI prize at the Viennale , but is also considered a disaster and a trigger for various controversies (see below). In 2010 he received the Actor Award at the 67th Venice Film Festival for his role as the abducted Taliban in Jerzy Skolimowski's feature film Essential Killing .
Gallo is said to have had a number of relationships and affairs with celebrities. Among other things, he is said to have been with Asia Argento and PJ Harvey ; by his own account, he also had an affair with Paris Hilton . His relationship with Chloë Sevigny was in particular talked about through his collaboration in the film The Brown Bunny .
The Brown Bunny Controversy
The 2003 film The Brown Bunny sparked a number of controversies. On the one hand, because it contains an explicit fellatio scene between Gallo and Sevigny, which, according to the Süddeutscher Zeitung , you get to see "otherwise only (by) professional porn actor (s)". On the other hand, an intense dispute arose over the film between Gallo and the film critic Roger Ebert , who had described the film as "the worst in the history of the Cannes Film Festival ". Gallo subsequently referred to Ebert as a "fat pig", which he countered by pointing out that he at least had the opportunity to lose weight, while Gallo would remain the director of The Brown Bunny for all eternity . Gallo then wished him cancer . A version of the film redesigned by Gallo later rated Ebert surprisingly relatively benevolent to many.
Reports that Gallo had apologized to his sponsors for the film, he responded with the explanation that he never apologized for anything, and one more failure: "I'm sorry I'm not gay or Jewish, so there aren't any Section of journalists who support me ” .
"Merchandise"
Gallo runs his own page for merchandise , on which he offers his companion services to women for 50,000 US dollars . There are also various devotional objects from his childhood, inflatable Charles Manson dolls signed by him, and various of his works. Special media attention received his offer to sell his sperm for $ 1,000,000. In particular, his refusal to sell to blacks contained in the accompanying text and the granting of a discount to Aryan women (blond, blue-eyed) or proven descendants of German soldiers from World War II were sharply criticized in the press.
