Paul "Sage" Francis (born November 18, 1976 in Miami , Florida ) is an American hip-hop musician from Providence , Rhode Island .

Musical career

Prior to his MC career , Sage Francis was known as a slam poet . In the late 1990s, he recorded his first demo tape (1996), fronted the now defunct hip-hop band Art Official Intelligence, and hosted the weekly True School Sessions radio program on the non-commercial regional radio station WRIU.

He founded the group Non-Prophets with producer Joe Beats. This released two 12 "(Drop Bass / Bounce / I Keep Callin, Emerge Records, 1999 and All Word No Play / Majority Rule / Whore Monger Sing-Along, Emerge Music, 2000) before the 2003 debut album was released Long- playing record Hope (Lex Records) followed in 2003. As a freestyle rapper, Sage Francis won the "Scribble Jam" in 2000 and competed again in 2001 under the pseudonym Xaul Zan .

He often works with other artists from the US underground hip-hop scene such as Slug , the late Eyedea , Daddy Kev and the Anticon collective. There is also a loose connection with The Orphanage. He also collaborated with the British rapper Scroobius Pip , on whose label Speech Development Records Francis' album Copper Gone was released in Great Britain.

One of his most famous tracks is Makeshift Patriot , a commentary on the US media one month after the 9/11 attacks , which he released both as an MP3 file on the Internet and on a limited 7 " single . Sage Francis became the first hip-hop artist to release with a punk record company when he signed a contract with Epitaph Records in 2003 for three albums.

His album Li (f) e was released in 2010 on ANTI-Records , a sub-label of Epitaph. Thanks to the involvement of various non-hip-hop songwriters such as Jason Lytle from Grandaddy , Chris Walla from Death Cab for Cutie and Mark Linkous from Sparklehorse , a number of pop , rock and country borrowings can be found in the new songs.

In addition to his studio albums, a number of mixtapes were released, most of which had a "sick of ..." or something similar in the title.
