Anticon

Anticon ( spelling anticon. ) Is an independent label from the coastal region of San Francisco and was founded in 1998 by seven musicians and today's manager Baillie Parker. The name Anticon stands for "anti-conventional", or "anti-conformity" or "ant-icon", which is to be understood as a play on words in relation to the Anticons logo, a silhouette of an ant .

The artists within the Anticon collective perform both in groups and as soloists, and often collaborate with other artists inside and outside the collective. Many members belong to multiple labels , some even have their own small independent label through which they publish their own works. Not least because of this great influence of different musicians and styles to anticon has a group of artists, most of which originated in the hip-hop - Genre , have widely diversified with music style and strong influences from electronica , folk and indie rock developed. history

The individual members come from all over the USA and met over the Internet in the mid-1990s. They shared an interest in a very specific form of hip-hop music. By e-mail and chat , they exchanged among themselves and gathered in this way over the years a lot of material on.

In 1998, Sole, Doseone , Alias and Slug met in person for the first time and recorded their first album together in just two days, for which they called themselves " Deep Puddle Dynamics " and which was released in 1999 on the label Anticon founded in-house. The first solo albums appeared shortly afterwards. Hemispheres by Doseone was the first to appear on Funksion / 1200 Hobos in 1998.

Some of them, Sole, Jel , Alias ​​and DJ Mayonnaise moved to East Oakland in the Bay Area together . A very experimental and innovative hip-hop scene already existed there at the end of the 90s. Numerous albums have been released since then. Most are considered to be trend-setting for independent hip-hop.
