history
The story of Death Cab for Cutie began in 1997 in Bellingham, Washington, USA with the solo project All-Time Quarterback by Ben Gibbard . Due to the positive response to the tape You Can Play These Songs with Chords , Gibbard decided to expand the solo project to include a band. In guitarist Christopher Walla, bassist Nick Harmer and drummer Nathan Good, he found the right people for this project. The name of the band goes back to the song "Death Cab for Cutie" by the London beat band Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah - also featured in the The Beatles video "Magical Mystery Tour" .
In 1998 the US indie label Barsuk Records released their debut album Something About Airplanes and received consistently good reviews within the independent scene. After Nathan Good left the band and was replaced by Michael Schorr, the band completed the follow-up We Have the Facts, and We're Voting Yes shortly thereafter . After the release of two EPs ( Forbidden Love , Stability ) and another album ( The Photo Album ), You Can Play These Songs with Chords was re-released in October 2002 , supplemented by rarities, covers and B-sides.
Singer Benjamin Gibbard also forms together with Jimmy Tamborello, known as Dntel, the electronic duo The Postal Service , which released an album ( Give Up , 2003) and several EPs . The album was awarded a platinum record due to sales of over one million records. At the same time, former guitarist Christopher Walla had a solo project called Martin Youth Auxiliary . Christopher Walla is also a producer and has produced bands such as Nada Surf , The Thermals , Tegan and Sara and The Decemberists in addition to the Death Cab for Cutie albums .
In 2003 Jason McGerr joined the band as a drummer. In the same year, the fourth album Transatlanticism was released. With songs like The New Year , Sound of Settling or the title track Transatlanticism , Death Cab for Cutie made their breakthrough in Europe - at the beginning of 2004 they played their first concerts in Germany. The Hamburg indie label Grand Hotel van Cleef was responsible for releasing the album in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. During this time, the band's music increasingly took place in American TV programs. At OC, California , the band was considered the favorite band of the character Seth Cohen , played by actor Adam Brody . In addition, the band had a cameo in the form of a concert in the second season .
After the change from Barsuk Records to the major label Atlantic Records , a subsidiary of the Warner Music Group , the new album Plans was released on August 30, 2005 . This was nominated for a Grammy in the category “ Best Alternative Album of 2006” .
On October 16, 2009, the single Meet Me on the Equinox was released , which was written for the soundtrack to the film New Moon - Bis (s) zur Mittagshrunde and is the only place in the German single charts so far.
On May 31, 2011, the band released their seventh studio album called Codes and Keys . The first single You Are a Tourist from the album was released on March 29, 2011. The song is characterized by its music video, which is their first live music video in a plan sequence . Codes and Keys was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the 54th Grammy Awards in 2012 . In October 2013 the band began to work on their eighth album and simultaneously released a remastered version of Transatlanticism for the 10th anniversary, which was released in the form of a record and demo version of all songs.
On August 13, 2014 guitarist and songwriter Christopher Walla announced after 17 years that he was leaving the band. He played his last concert on September 13, 2014 at the Rifflandia Music Festival in Canada . However, he was involved in the recording process of the studio album Kintsugi , which was released on March 31, 2015. In October 2016, the band announced the release of a single entitled Million Dollar Loan . The song as a protest song against the presidential candidate of the Republican Party , Donald Trump was thought was a campaign called within 30 Days, 30 songs published. In a Facebook post about the song, Ben Gibbard mentioned that both Dave Depper and Zac Rae, as part of the band and contributors, were involved in writing the arrangement of the song, indicating that the two became full members of the band.
