Chvrches (. Pronounced as "churches" (English churches) and stylized as CHVRCHΞS ) is founded in 2011, Scottish electro - band from Glasgow . It consists of singer Lauren Mayberry (* 1987), Iain Cook (* 1974) and Martin Doherty (* 1982).

history

Iain Cook, Lauren Mayberry, Martin Doherty (2014)

Before Chvrches, Iain Cook was a member of the groups Aereogramme and The Unwinding Hours and worked as a film and television composer. Martin Doherty was a live member of The Twilight Sad . According to Mayberry, Iain and Martin went to college together, which is why they had known each other for a while.

Mayberry holds a law degree followed by a masters degree in journalism. She then worked as a freelance journalist for a few years. She has been playing the piano since childhood and drums since she was a teenager . From 15 to 22 she played drums in various bands. Before Chvrches, Mayberry was a member of two Glasgow bands, Boyfriend / Girlfriend and Blue Sky Archives. In the latter she was a singer, drummer and keyboard player.

Cook had already produced an EP for Blue Sky Archives in 2011 . When he started a new project with Doherty, he asked Mayberry to sing on the demo recordings. Cook, Mayberry and Doherty composed for seven or eight months in a basement studio in Glasgow and decided to form a new band after the collaboration proved successful. They chose the name Chvrches , with a Roman "v" to avoid confusion with real churches when searching the Internet. Chvrches also stated that the band name "had no religious background, but [they] thought it just sounded cool."

In May 2012 Chvrches presented their song Lies , which was available as an exclusive download on the Neon Gold label's website. This single was followed by The Mother We Share in September 2012.

In June 2012, The Guardian wrote about Chvrches as one of the New Bands of the Day . The band was ranked 5th on the BBC's 2013 list of the most promising young artists .

The BBC described the debut single The Mother We Share as "Electro-pop that only shimmers when the tears have been wiped from the speakers." " The Mother We Share causes a kind of inner excitement with its accessible yet sophisticated synthesizer - Motifs, located somewhere between Robyn and The Knife ”. The single was written and recorded in two days. Lies was # 28 on NME ’s Best Tracks of 2012. The Mother We Share was # 51 on The Huffington Post's Top 52 Songs of 2012 .

On February 6th, 2013 Chvrches presented their new single Recover . This was, followed by the Recover EP , released on March 25, 2013 in Great Britain on the Goodbye / Virgin label and on March 26, 2013 on the Glassnote label. The album reached number 16 on the German album charts and number 11 on the US Billboard 200.

The EP Hansa Session followed in November 2018 , containing five tracks from their third studio album, which were re-recorded in the Berlin Hansa Studios in spring 2018 in an acoustic version with string quartet arrangements.
