The T in the Park Festival is the largest Scottish music festival and took place annually from 1994 to 2016. It is named after its main sponsor, Tennent's Lager . It was originally conducted at Strathclyde Park, Lanarkshire , and from 1997 to 2014 it took place at the disused airfield Balado , Kinross-shire . Due to an oil pipeline at the previous location, it took place in 2015 and 2016 near Strathallan Castle in Perthshire . In the following years the festival was suspended.
T in the Park was initially a two-day festival, but has been held over three days since moving to Balado in 2007; Since 2008 it has been possible to use a weekend camping ticket to gain access to the festival camping site on Thursday, the day before the musicians perform. The festival is promoted by DF Concerts .
The festival attracts up to 85,000 people per day, including up to 70,000 campers.
history
The festival was founded in 1994 as part of a joint venture between DF Concerts and Tennent's Lager, with some help from Irish promotional company MCD Productions . The current festival director Geoff Ellis was involved from the start. Ellis came in 1992 to Scotland to the club King Tut's Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow manage. He organized the first T in the Park festival in 1994 with a few bands in front of 17,000 people at its original location in Strathclyde Park, Lanarkshire . The festival was held here for three years, until 1997, before moving to the disused Balado airfield in Kinross-shire . Since moving to Balado, the festival has grown steadily and since 2003 has attracted up to 55,000 people a day, up to 110,000 visitors over the entire weekend.
The festival was originally a two-day event until 2007, when Friday became the main day of live music. However, the performances at the Festival 2007 on Friday were missed by many festival goers because they were stuck in traffic jams of up to ten miles on the A91 and A977 motorways .
In order to avoid a repetition of the traffic chaos, the organizers allowed access to the festival campsite as early as Thursday from 2008 in order to reduce the number of vehicles on the streets. By expanding to a full three days, the festival began to grow rapidly and soon became the second largest green space festival in the UK, and the fifth largest in the world.
In 2013 over 250,000 people from all over Europe attended the three-day festival. According to DF Concerts, 20% of the crowd is made up of visitors from outside Scotland, with about 2% attending from overseas. According to DF Concerts, 20% of the visitors came from outside Scotland, around 2% of them from overseas. In recent years the festival has shared much of its program with Oxegen , a festival that took place over the same weekend in County Kildare , Ireland . The artists usually played one day at T in the Park and the next at Oxegen , or vice versa. In addition to the seven main music stages, there were large camping areas for the majority of festival goers who stayed for the duration of the event. There were also various concessions for stalls and shops, as well as other attractions, such as a large fair complete with a Ferris wheel .
The T in the Park 2013 festival took place from July 11-14, 2013. It was the twentieth edition of the festival. The Killers , Rihanna and Mumford & Sons were the headliners.
Neds and antisocial behavior
The festival has a reputation for attracting Neds : young men associated with hooliganism , inappropriate, overly casual sportswear, and a healthy dose of stupidity.
A journalist described T in the Park in the newspaper The Scotsman as "premier gathering of neds" (about "leading gathering of Neds "). In addition to general misconduct and disorder, Neds were also responsible for more serious criminal acts during the festival. The organizers were aware of the presence of the Neds and stressed that they would be “not welcome” to the event. While many saw the festival as a haven for Neds , there were some who felt that the presence of Neds during the event was exaggerated.
