The James Taylor Quartet , also known as JTQ , is a British band in the field of jazz radio that at times flirted with acid jazz . The band also recorded under the name New Jersey Kings records. The quartet consists of James Taylor, Nigel Price, Gary Crockett and Neil Robinson. During recordings and live performances, they are regularly reinforced by a brass section with currently John Willmott (tenor saxophone, flute) and Nick Smart (trumpet) as well as the singer Yvonne Yanney.
The James Taylor Quartet has no ties to the American folk / pop musician James Taylor .
history
Beginnings with film music
The quartet emerged from the group The Prisoners. Herbie Hancock's film music classic Blow-Up was the first single recording of the James Taylor Quartet in 1985 for the record label Re Elect the President , the later acid jazz label. The title was played by John Peel for three years on the Festive 50 Charts show . The band's debut album, Mission Impossible , which was released the following year, also contained songs from the 1960s that were known from feature films, such as Alfie (from Der Verfuhrer lets greetings ), Mrs. Robinson (from The Maturity Exam ) or Goldfinger (from James Bond 007 - Goldfinger ). In contrast, the second album, The Money Spyder , formed the soundtrack to an imaginary film about spies.
After the third album Absolute (1991), recorded in a live atmosphere , the band, which until then only played instrumental numbers, changed styles and released albums with songs aimed at the British soul and acid scene. Singers such as Rose Windross from Soul II Soul , Alison Limerick and Noel McKoy were involved in them. McKoy was part of the band for a while. The group made it into the top 40 with the single Love the Life ; the album Supernatural Feeling also hit the UK charts. The following album, In the Hand of the Inevitable, sold even better.
Back to the beginnings
Subsequently, the James Taylor Quartet returned to the original style, which was heavily influenced by bands like Booker T. & the MG's . The band occasionally covered titles like Whole Lotta Love , Dirty Harry or Jesus Christ Superstar , but mainly dealt with their own compositions. The band has also worked with Tom Jones , The Wonder Stuff , Manic Street Preachers , The Pogues, and U2 , and acted as the house band on Gaby Roslin's talk show on Channel 4 . Occasionally the James Taylor Quartet expands into a big band.
