Jazz radio
Jazz radio is a subtype of fusion in which, in contrast to jazz rock , funk was chosen as a supplementary element. This style of music was very popular with Afro-American musicians in the 1970s . As with jazz rock, Miles Davis is considered to be the founder of this movement.
Today you can find traces of this genre in a flash of jazz . The term jazz radio is hardly used these days.
Characteristics
Like all of the fusion currents that are committed to eclecticism , jazz radio appears in a multitude of manifestations and reaches individually different forms. Nevertheless, certain basic tendencies can be identified that distinguish jazz radio from other trends in modern jazz:
- A hard groove takes the place of swing , also with the help of drum computers
- The line-up essentially corresponds to that of a funk combo (including electric bass , electric guitar )
- The melody instruments mostly come from the tradition of older jazz styles (e.g. saxophone , trumpet , oboe )
- rhythmically complex bass runs with extended, often virtuoso playing techniques (e.g. slapping )
- the harmonic backbone is preferably particularly since the 1980s synthesizers supported
- Improvisation usually takes place over extended vamps
- Use of various guitar and bass effects (e.g. phaser , wah-wah )
