Gabriel Byrne
Gabriel Byrne (born May 12, 1950 in Dublin , Ireland ) is an Irish film actor .
Life
Byrne was the first of six children in Crumlin in Dublin ( Ireland ), son of a cooper born and soldiers and a nurse. One of his sisters died at a young age. Byrne was raised strictly Roman Catholic and wanted to be a priest himself. After four and a half years in a seminary with the Christian Brothers in England, Byrne returned to Dublin at the age of 15. There he made his way through various odd jobs before starting to study literature , archeology , Spanish and Gaelic at the University of Dublin . For some time he lived and worked as an English teacher in Spain, then returned to Dublin and taught Spanish at a girls' school.
Byrne revealed on Irish television that he was a victim of sexual harassment while attending the seminary on The Meaning of Life . Before that he had toyed with the idea of becoming a priest himself; however, through this experience he refrained from doing so.
Byrne began his career as a stage actor in 1979 at the Focus Theater in Dublin. The director at the time, Deirdre O'Connell, instructed him - like Colm Meaney - in the Stanislawski acting trade . He then moved to the Project Theater, which at the time was headed by the now very successful Irish director Jim Sheridan . The early acting ensemble also included Liam Neeson and Stephen Rea . This was followed by Byrne's involvement in the television series The Riordans and Bracken . He stood in front of a film camera for the first time in 1981 in John Boorman's Excalibur .
In addition to his acting career, Byrne is also active as a producer, screenwriter, writer and director. The film he produced, In the Name of the Father, was nominated for an Oscar in 1993 in the Best Picture category. In the theater he enjoyed great success on Broadway . He played the leading male role twice in plays by Eugene O'Neill : 2000 in A Moon for the Loaded and 2005 in Almost a Poet . In 2003 he was in the play against the death penalty The Exonerated by Erik Jensen and Jessica Blank.
From 2008 to 2010, Byrne successfully played the lead role of psychotherapist Dr. Paul Weston on the HBO series In Treatment . This earned him a Golden Globe Award and two Emmy nominations in 2009 .
Gabriel Byrne was married to actress Ellen Barkin until 1999 , whom he met in 1987 while filming the film Siesta . They have a son (* 1989) and a daughter (* 1992) together. Byrne has lived in New York City for some time to be close to his children living with his mother.
Gabriel Byrne is dubbed in Germany by Klaus-Dieter Klebsch , among others .
