Gabriel Byrne (born May 12, 1950 in Dublin , Ireland ) is an Irish film actor .

Life

Byrne was the first of six children in Crumlin in Dublin ( Ireland ), son of a cooper born and soldiers and a nurse. One of his sisters died at a young age. Byrne was raised strictly Roman Catholic and wanted to be a priest himself. After four and a half years in a seminary with the Christian Brothers in England, Byrne returned to Dublin at the age of 15. There he made his way through various odd jobs before starting to study literature , archeology , Spanish and Gaelic at the University of Dublin . For some time he lived and worked as an English teacher in Spain, then returned to Dublin and taught Spanish at a girls' school.
