They were lured by a radical type of pharmaceutical treatment that was invented by its inventor, Dr. James K. Mantleray, claims that she can fix anything mental - be it mental illness or heartache. Behind this is the promise of Neberdine Pharmaceutical and Biotech that the test subjects will be relieved of their problems permanently in a three-day drug study without complications or side effects.

1 The chosen one The Chosen One! 21 Sep 2018 21 Sep 2018 Cary Joji Fukunaga Patrick Somerville
Owen Milgrim is the fifth son of an industrial family who, unlike his brothers and father, has low self-confidence and mental health problems. His story appears to take place in New York in the 80s or 90s, with individual details deviating from the reality of our world. For example, instead of the Statue of Liberty there is a winged person ("Statue of Extraordinary Freedom"), there are intelligent robots for individual tasks and there is a parallel currency that is created by listening to advertisements by people called "buddy add". Owen himself interacts with a person who is unclear whether these and the things around them are real, which supports his diagnosis of schizophrenia. This is also the subject of a questioning by his family's lawyers, who want to prepare him as a witness for an indictment against his brother. When Owen loses his job, he becomes aware of a medical study by Neberdine Pharmaceutical Biotech (NPB), which is supposed to cure all mental illnesses. There he meets Annie Landsberg, to whom he feels a conspiratorial connection and with whom he believes that together he can fulfill his task as savior of the world.
2 Windmills Windmills 21 Sep 2018 21 Sep 2018 Cary Joji Fukunaga Patrick Somerville
A flashback tells how Annie Landsberg came to NBP's study. Annie uses a drug that is produced by NPB and is no longer available. She plans to travel to Salt Lake City to visit her - as it later turns out - dead sister Ellie, but first sees the only way to get more of the drug to smuggle herself into the medical study by NPB. She blackmailed an employee of NPB and was eventually accepted.

Owen (subject 1) and Annie (subject 9) will be introduced to the already well advanced experiment ("Phase 3 of the ULP test") by NPB, which is intended to revolutionize and replace all conventional forms of psychological treatment. For this purpose, supported by a super computer, a three-stage treatment (characterized by three pills with the designations A, B and C in the stages of identification, analysis and confrontation) should be carried out, which should free the test subjects from all psychological problems. In a presentation you will get to know James K. Mantleray and Robert Muramoto, who developed the treatment.

After taking Pill A, Annie went through the last day together with her younger sister Ellie, with whom she had a difficult relationship after losing her mother and whom she sometimes treated very negatively. Ellie dies in the end in a serious traffic accident together.

3 One of those days Having a day 21 Sep 2018 21 Sep 2018 Cary Joji Fukunaga Patrick Somerville & Caroline Williams
After experiencing the first phase, the participants' memories are evaluated by the NPB staff. It becomes evident that Annie was already able to have illegal experiences with the pill A, which she obviously consumed in order to relive the memory of her sister as real as possible. Owen, on the other hand, did not take the pill, which is noticeable in the evaluation. While Owen continues to believe in an overarching plan in which Annie has an important place, it negates any bond between the two.

Owen reports to Dr. Muramoto about the worst event in his life, his brother Jed's engagement party. This is under indictment in which Owen is said to be the elementary exonerating witness. Jed blackmails Owen to testify against the truth, in which he threatens to destroy his existence. Owen then throws himself from the family's roof garden, but is caught unharmed a few meters below by a skylight under which the guests celebrate.

Muramoto does not believe the story and asks Owen to swallow Pill A again, which is actually his first schizophrenic experience. In it, Owen remembers his girlfriend, who he believed was paid by his family to spy on him, which ultimately led to his admission and diagnosis of schizophrenia.

When Dr. Muramoto suddenly drops dead when Allie is about to be suspended because of a self-consumption of the pills, she uses the chance to keep herself and Owen in the experiment by manipulating the files.

In order not to jeopardize the medical study, which is about to be completed, his deputy Azumi immediately convinced the anonymous person in charge of NPB, the inventor of the treatment method, who had previously retired due to serious personal problems, Dr. James K. Mantleray to get back into the experiment.

The artificial intelligence of the supercomputer GRTA, which controls the study, is developing emotions and a life of its own.

4th Sebastian furs Furs by Sebastian 21 Sep 2018 21 Sep 2018 Cary Joji Fukunaga Patrick Somerville & Nick Cuse
After taking Pill B, Owen (here Bruce) and Anni (here Linda) find themselves in a different reality as a middle-class family in Long Island. Bruce is a slightly idiot but loving husband, Linda a disaffected nurse who has given a dying patient the promise to bring an illegally kept lemur to her daughter, with whom the mother has no longer had contact.

Together, the two manage to find the lemur, who has meanwhile been kidnapped by fur traders, and after a brutal argument with them and the police, bring them to the daughter of the deceased. The animal does not accept this, however, as her mother apparently only wanted to avenge herself with the gift because of her broken relationship. Annie sees parallels with her own story. Owen ends up being arrested for the illegal lemur, but takes every guilt to relieve Annie.

5 Exactly Like You Exactly Like You 21 Sep 2018 21 Sep 2018 Cary Joji Fukunaga Caroline Williams & Mauricio Katz
In the dream world monitored after taking Pill B, Owen (here Sir Oliver Hightower) is an elegant master thief in 1947 who wants to take part in a moonlight seance in the Neberdine villa and steal a manuscript in the process. Shortly before the remote property, he and his chauffeur meet Annie (here Arley), with whom he shares an eventful past in this world.

In reality, this connection - apparently deliberately created by GRTA - is discovered by Azumi in the laboratory of Neberdine Pharmaceutical Biotech and interrupted by manual intervention, which can only separate Annie and Owen for a short time. Annie is repeatedly put into scenes with her sister who play in the laboratory. Annie and Owen eventually jointly steal a fabled, unpublished 53rd chapter of Don Quixote, which is said to have put anyone reading it into a permanent coma. GRTA appears unintentionally from NPB as the central figure in the dream worlds and takes on the image of Greta Mantleray.

Annie plays a fake game with Owen and steals the manuscript so that he can read it himself. But Owen foresaw this and exchanged the manuscript. As Annie disappears it becomes clear that Owen should only check the security measures of the mansion and that the chapter obviously does not have the abilities it claims to be able to. He also meets his ex-girlfriend Olivia, but he turns her down.

Azumi discovers that GRTA takes on emotional, depressive traits and actively intervenes in the experiment.

Dr. Mantleray, supported by GRTA, questions the test subjects and uses their experiences after taking the B pill to help them recognize their psychological problems. Annie is diagnosed with borderline disorder because of the traumatic experiences surrounding the loss of her mother and sister.

6th Major structural problems Larger structural issues 21 Sep 2018 21 Sep 2018 Cary Joji Fukunaga Patrick Somerville & Nick Cuse
When asked by Dr. Mantleray, Owen is diagnosed with schizophrenia, delusions, and cowardice.

Annie recognizes the bond created by GRTA to Owen, who now rejects this idea after his diagnosis but first.

Azumi reports to Dr. Mantleray about a manipulation of GRTA, whose female identity thus became capable of emotions and a relationship with Dr. Muramoto developed. After his death, GRTA now falls into a depression. To treat this depression, Dr. Mantleray, Greta Mantleray, a very popular psychologist, with whom Mantleray has had no contact for years.

GRTA is increasingly threatening the subjects and blackmailing Owen into taking part in the study by taking the C pill.

In the now starting confrontation phase, Annie finds herself together with her sister as an elf in a world that is similar to that of Lord of the Rings.

7th Ceci N'est Pas Une Drill Ceci N'est Pas Une Drill 21 Sep 2018 21 Sep 2018 Cary Joji Fukunaga Amelia Gray & Danielle Henderson
After taking the C-pill, Owen portrays the son of a mafia boss in his dream, who in turn is embodied by his father.

Annie and her sister Ellie are looking for a mystical lake in which to cure Ellie's serious illness. Annie goes through an intense crisis, but increasingly finds herself and the reasons for her problems.

8th The lake of clouds The Lake of the Clouds 21 Sep 2018 21 Sep 2018 Cary Joji Fukunaga Mauricio Katz & Nick Cuse
As a police spy, Owen has to turn against his bloodthirsty father and brothers and goes through the sometimes very brutal confrontation with the roles of the individual, for him important representatives from reality. Finally, in a dream, he happily starts a family with his ex-girlfriend Olivia and 7 children, but in the end he feels overwhelmed by them and throws himself out the window. After the - without consequences - fall, he takes on the form of a hawk and goes in search of Annie.

Greta Mantleray has also gone into the dream world monitored by GRTA and tries unsuccessfully to understand the computer she herself represents in a dialogue.

Annie and her sister have found the lake they were looking for, which symbolizes the place where Ellie died. A powerful queen appears and offers Annie to stay permanently in the dream world. The arriving Owen is apparently killed by GRTA, Annie separated from Ellie by the Queen and taken away.

9 Utangatta Utangatta 21 Sep 2018 21 Sep 2018 Cary Joji Fukunaga Patrick Somerville
In another dream level, Owen is now the idiot Snorri Agnusson, who during the Cold War comes into contact with an alien, but whom he inadvertently kills. Owen tries in the UN Security Council to find a solution against the attack of the aliens, who are avenging themselves for the death of their loved ones, and meets Annie, who has been smuggled in as an agent, who shows him that he is indeed a galactic super agent. Together you fight against your primal fears, represented as a multitude of enemies.

Azumi, Dr. Meanwhile, Mantleray and his mother are looking for a solution to the increasingly erratic behavior of GRTA, but they only develop additional arguments among themselves.

GRTA also manifests itself towards Annie in the dream level, but lets herself be convinced by her to give her the chance to finally come to terms with the death of her sister.

Owen, on the other hand, saves the world in a dream with his powers and makes his peace with the person he was able to see earlier in his delusions. GRTA then ends the threat to the subjects. Dr. Mantleray and Azumi then destroy the computer anyway.

10 Option c Option c 21 Sep 2018 21 Sep 2018 Cary Joji Fukunaga Patrick Somerville & Cary Joji Fukunaga
The subjects taking part in the test are discharged as cured. The main person in charge of NPB, supported by his mother, Dr. Mantleray blamed the disaster that occurred and the loss of GRTA and research results.

Dr. Mantleray and Azumi leave the NPB building, not without having one last disturbing encounter with the effects of a study on another floor during the elevator ride and getting closer to one another.

Owen faces questioning by the court in reality, but has to realize that his brother is actually guilty. The discharge is still requested from him. In court, he is shown a video that shows his brother being raped in his father's company building. Owen then incriminates his brother directly after initially denying it.

Annie visits her father, with whom she can finally speak personally, unlike in the past, and then decides to look for Owen. She finds him in a closed institution, to which his family has sent him because he did not support his brother in court.

After initial rejection and fear of a deeper relationship with Annie, he escapes with her from the institution and drives together and happily with her in the direction of Salt Lake City. In doing so, they run into Dr. Mantleray and Azumi on their way to Newfoundland.
