James Monroe Iglehart

James Monroe Iglehart (born September 4, 1974 in Hayward , California ) is an American musical actor and actor . He became famous for his portrayal of the genie in the musical Aladdin , for which he was awarded the Tony Award .

Career

The son of a businessman and a music teacher attended California State University in Hayward. His first paid role was in a production of Ain't Misbehavin ', followed by appearances as the priest in Bat Boy and as Vince Fontaine in Grease .

He made his Broadway debut in 2007 when he replaced Derrik Baskin in the role of Mitch Mahoney in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee . In 2009 he was cast as Bobby in Memphis , which he played until the last performance on August 5, 2012. As Genie in the musical Aladdin , he received the Tony Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2014 . After over 1000 performances as Dschinni, Iglehart gave his final performance on February 19, 2017 and switched to the team of the musical Hamilton . There he embodies Thomas Jefferson and Marquis de Lafayette .
