Hayward is a city in Alameda County in the US state of California with 144,186 inhabitants (as of 2010 ). The metropolitan area has a size of 163.3 km² and is located on the southeast bank of the Bay of San Francisco between San Leandro in the northwest and Fremont in the southeast. It belongs to the metropolitan area of San Francisco Bay Area .
The city was named after William Hayward , a worker from New England who settled here during the " California Gold Rush " in 1849 and opened the first shoe shop. The Schafer Park recreation area , named after the German immigrant AW Schafer (probably formerly Schäfer ) , also belongs to Hayward .
Because the city is now a suburb of San Francisco , it does not have a large downtown area. At least, unlike other cities in the region, there is a small inner city, where most of the shops are on B Street between Mission and Foothill Boulevard.
education
California State University, East Bay is in the city .
traffic
- Hayward is connected to public transport in the San Francisco area by two lines of the S-Bahn or subway system BART ( Bay Area Rapid Transit ), which lead to Fremont.
- The San Mateo – Hayward Bridge , which spans the Bay of San Francisco, connects Hayward to the San Francisco Peninsula and thus to Silicon Valley .
